I have an albino female cory that is about 6 y/o. For the last 2 days she has been sort of laying 1/2 on her side on the bottom of the tank for long periods. She also seems bloated. Usually when she lays eggs, she is very active, so if she is getting ready to lay, something MUST be wrong. If not, does anyone have any other ideas what could be wrong? I will probably not be able to get her to a vet now until Monday, so any help is greatly appreciated.

The other fish (all corys) in the tank seem fine, so I am at a loss.

My goldfish is doing pretty good. He is a regular golfish. He swims to the edges of his bowl a lot and i was wondering two things: How do i know if my bowl is too small? and my fish has a little bit of black on the edge of his backfins, is that normal? Ive been adding a petshop water purifier to his water which i change every 3 days.

i recieved two black moor goldfish for my birthday two weeks ago. they were in a bowl with tap water. the next day they didn't look so happy so i ran to get the water treatment chemicals. i put it in but when i got home later that night, one of my fish was dead. i panicked and changed my other fish into a different bowl with fresh treated water. later that week i moved him back into the original bowl but the water kept getting murky. i have never had fish before. i noticed a white spot on his head and realized her has ick. on monday of this week, i went to petco and purchased a 2 gallon cheap plastic tank with a filter and a real plant. since then my fish has seemed much happier, swimming around in the clean water and hiding. i do not know how to treat the ick though. i can only find information on how to treat ick in larger tanks!!! help! he's my first fish and i love him! =)

I have a denison barb (rose-line shark) that has developed a big lump in it's throat. The other denison barbs and several tiger barbs recently had a parasite that was making them skip the backs of their heads of the ornaments and gravel. I treated the tank, and they seem to be ok now - but I'm not sure about the lump. Any insight will be appreciated...

I have asked this question before, but i didn't get many answers. Anyway, I have a sunset platy that has puffy gills all over! And in a spot the gills are even coming off. It almost looks like it is shedding its giils, or like it has goosebumps on its body. ( I can't think of any other way to put it) It has been like this for a little over 2 weeks. My mom said it was a bacterial infection, and she said that mold or fungus would start growing on it soon. But that hasn't happened yet. Any ideas about what the heck this could be???

I have a tank with 5 different African Cichlids in it. The yellow lab looks like it may be carrying eggs. How should I care for it? How many could it have in there? What are the chances of survival for the fry if I do not remove them or the other fish from the aquarium?

Ammonia is .5, Ph is 6.8, water is soft (about 50), nitrites 0, nitrates 20, temp 77F. The strip guide says my water is safe. I've read on here that any ammonia will kill my fish. Who's right, the strip guide or you all?

I have small snails that I have had no problem breeding, But I got a different kind that I would like to breed. These are small spiral snails. I have had them for a month or so and they are not laying eggs. My other snails have recently stopped as well. I just dont get it. I know that I need to change the water and I will do that soon. I put my newer snails in a small tank by themselves to help the process. Any help would be apreciated!

My boyfriend and I have a 40 gal fish tank. How do I tell if the filter is actually working? I rinsed the cartridge out the other day and it was full of green stuff. (The tank is always green even though I have taken out most of the light around it.) It seems VERY quiet like the water isnt moving but I cant tell if it is. (if not can you recommend a filter?)

A.) At first glance I figured they were microworms. However, someone told me that microworms stay relatively 'straight" while other parasites commonly mistaken for them 'squiggle'. These are definitely squigglers. Any idea what they are?

B.) What is the best way to get rid of them without changing/stopping my filter (which contains carbon)? I can't change it or stop it cause I have 4 RES turtles and they are very messy and the filter always has to be running!

Do chinese algae eaters really start sucking on the sides of other fish when they are adults? If so, how can I keep them from doing that to my fish? I can't buy another 20 gallon. I have an 18 gallon. My dad is letting me get a 5 gallon tank, but only that. I won't be able to get it until 3 weeks from now or less... Also, what fish should I move from my 18 gallon to the 5 gallon? I have:
- 2 rasbora heteromorphas (harlequin)
- 2 sunset coral dwarf platy
- 2 neon tetras
- 3 glow light tetras
- 2 CAEs
- 3 fancy guppies; 2 female 1 male

One of the CAEs is always on the bottom and seems to be dead. He isnt as active as the other one, who is VERY active. Is something wrong with him? Is he going to die? What can I do? I thank you guys for all the wonderful answers you gave me and will give me for this question. You guys know where and how to use your knowledge about fish. Way to go! :-) :-D Keep up your good work!

I’ve had my tank for about 5 months, for the first 2 months, everything was fine, my fish were even breeding.
Then my building discovered that is had termites and we had to leave the building. I took EVERYTHING that could come into contact with my fish. Even the furniture. We waited an extra week before bringing them back. Now, I can’t seem to get the ammonia under control. I’ve done 4 30% water changes, and then last night I checked the levels and they were sky high. I did a 100% water change, bleached the rocks, bleached the tank, and the inside of the filters. [As directed by my local PetCo] 4 Hours later, the ammonia was okay. 14 Hours later, the ammonia is through the roof.
The Aquatic Fish Department and my are at a lost.
Does anyone have ANY ideas?
I’m willing to take Hoodoo into consideration at this point.
My friends make fun of me for stressing over these poor creatures so much, but I’d rather cut them [my friends] out of my life that cause a living creature harm.
