My boyfriend and I have a 40 gal fish tank. How do I tell if the filter is actually working? I rinsed the cartridge out the other day and it was full of green stuff. (The tank is always green even though I have taken out most of the light around it.) It seems VERY quiet like the water isnt moving but I cant tell if it is. (if not can you recommend a filter?)

If it was all full of algae, then it's working or at least was until recently. Look for the place the water returns to the tank and stick your hand there to see if water is moving through the filter or not. If not make sure it's pluged in, make sure the tubes are attached correctly etc and if everything looks right but it's not running it's time for a new filter. Personally, I have always had good luck with Whisper Power filters, but there are several other very good brands out there.

Hagen Aquaclear 50 or 70. If water is flowing out, it is working.
Tetra is better than most people think. I think the bio-wheel thing is overly complex and something could go wrong.

Its algae. in case you feed your fish flakes, there would a number of that there too. Its threat unfastened, yet once you do no longer like it, get a pleco, it will consume it. you ought to additionally substitute the sponges.
