Is it normal for platys to be territorial?

yes, to a certain degree. It is normal for them to chase each other around however their sex also plays a large role. If you have two males to one female the males will, non stop, hassle the female. You should have two females to each male, this will help to stop bullying. When i had platys i also noticed that the pairs of matching males and females would chase around the other ones. It may be possible that the colors of the fish have something to do with their aggressive behavior. Platys will not hesitate to bully other injured or pregnant fish, so look for that and separate until the other fish has "popped" or is better.

how many do you have, and are they territorial with each other or the other fish? usually you want to keep fish in odd numbers, 3,5,7.... this helps balance things for the fish. don't ask why.. it just does. ;) i wouldn't think they would be too territorial but i can't really say for sure.

Yes, they are slightly territorial by nature, but usually too small to really do anything about it.
