I have small snails that I have had no problem breeding, But I got a different kind that I would like to breed. These are small spiral snails. I have had them for a month or so and they are not laying eggs. My other snails have recently stopped as well. I just dont get it. I know that I need to change the water and I will do that soon. I put my newer snails in a small tank by themselves to help the process. Any help would be apreciated!

I'm not certain what kind of snails you're asking about. There are two that come to mind, so I'll provide info on those.

Ramshorn snail: http://www.liveaquaria.com/product/prod_Display.cfm?pCatId=1093 - these are egglayers.

Malaysian trumpet snail: http://www.aqualandpetsplus.com/Bug,%20Snails,%20Malaysian%20Trumpet.htm - you'll never get them to lay eggs, they bear live young.

Both of these are tropical, so my first thought is do you have the temperature high enough? My Malaysians aren't very active and don't reproduce unless the temperature is at least 74o, and they like plenty of gravel to burrow in. They also need to have enough food if they aren't in a tank with fish. Try the water change, and raise the temperature if it's too cool and see what that does.

Usually snails don't need to reproduce but maybe it's just your snails since snails don't breed all of the time.

You need to find out exactly what the kind of snails they are.

When you know the species, you'll be able to find the proper temperature, and water conditions that they need to breed.

In general snails like warmer water, with plenty of food, and lots of places to hide eggs.

Good luck.

last I knew snails can either be sexual (needing a partner) or they are hermaphrodites and reproduce with themselves.. below is a place to read a little more
