That's really almost impossible to answer these days because of so much cross breeding. Usually these cross breeds are labeled as Poecilia spp. because they aren't of anyone species and often no one is sure what species were interbred to create them. Generally speaking there are I believe 3 species of Poecilia that carry the common name of Molly Poecilia latipinna, Poecilia sphenops and Poecilia velifera. I have seen a few Lima sp. mislabeled as mollies in pet shops as well. That's one of the hazards of relying on common names for fish, they can be totally different from one area to the next and sometimes just made up on the spot by shops.

Of course, there are a huge variety of colors and patterns for each of these species. Just search the net by those scientific names and you'll find more pictures than you could ever dream of.

Well there are 2 major types of molly in the fish store the sailfin (Poecilia latipinna), and the black molly (Poecilia sphenops). Of course to make things complex the 2 interbreed, and most molly like the balloon, and lyre tailed are hybrids. To get even more complex is that the whole genus Poecilia are common called molly. Including such fish as the all female "Amazon molly" (Poecilia formosa). So the answer is 2, 6, or 40.
