I have asked this question before, but i didn't get many answers. Anyway, I have a sunset platy that has puffy gills all over! And in a spot the gills are even coming off. It almost looks like it is shedding its giils, or like it has goosebumps on its body. ( I can't think of any other way to put it) It has been like this for a little over 2 weeks. My mom said it was a bacterial infection, and she said that mold or fungus would start growing on it soon. But that hasn't happened yet. Any ideas about what the heck this could be???

Maybe it is the scales......(or not) but it is the outer gills...(you can see them just by looking at the fish....)

EDIT: OK... gottcha, puffy looking scales. If they are sticking out making the fish look like a pinecone then it's most likely an internal bacterial infection. If the scales are coming off and the skin looks all red and kinda bloodly a skin infection is most likely to blame. Either way, you can treat the fish with a good antibiotic. I would recommend Furanace if you can find it and if not then Maracyn 2 which is more common. Just remove the carbon from the filter and treat for 14 days. Be careful and try not to handle the medication with bare hands and always wash your hands well after touching the medicine or the water it's in. Best of luck and I hope he gets better.

It sounds like Ichthyophthirius (white spot), which is a parasitic infection. You would need to treat the fish with anti-parasite medication. The best idea is to take a photo of the fish and show it to the owners of an aquarium. They'll be able to point you in the right direction in terms of treatment.

Thats only a organic signal of aggression that male beta fish reveal. thoroughly frequent! did you comprehend that beta fish are between the worlds maximum aggressive animals? If there are 2 male betas in a tremendous pond, they're going to hunt one yet another down and strive against to the death; puffing up their gills and fins. Thats why you are able to in problem-free words have one in preserving with fish tank. Dont situation about it. he's only being his organic self. in case you position a replicate next to him, he will do the same aspect because he feels threatened by the sight of yet another beta. ultimately he will study that you aren't any more attempting to attack him and he might want to cool down. :)
