My ammonia levels are very high and I do not know why. I do weekly partial waters changes, have a Bio Wheel filter, and my PH is good (7.0 ish) . I have had the tank for about 2 months. My fish seem to be ok for now but my poor wife will be devasted if something were to happen to any of them!

tank stats are:
20 gallon tank, with one clown loach, 2 serpae tetras, one guppy, 4 neon tetras, and one black molly. I have about 8 inches of fish so i do not think it is overcrowed.

What is the best way to treat this, Stress Zyme of Prime ? or possibly another method ?
I use Stress Zyme when I do water changes and i change my carbon filter every few weeks.

what can i do ?

Thanks! this site is great

I have 6 goldfish, 2 are about 6 inches long, 2 about 4 inches and 2 about 3 inches (including fins). I also have 2 catfish about 2 inches long. The tank is 40L in capacity. Is it overcrowded? We have 2 filters and 2 air pumps but the water is very green. We have plastic plants for shade and ornaments for the fish to play in and around. I think there may be too much direct sunlight but there's nowhere to put it that would be any better. Please help! Thanks.

I turned on the light this morning and there were hundreds of tiny little white worms with forked tails on the glass. They dissappeared within a couple minutes back into the gravel I guess. What are they and how do I treat for them? I did a quick search on the web but only found info for salt water tanks. A couple of my fish have small white spots on them. I thought it was fungus now I'm not so sure.

Thanks for all the answers, i surmise that carbon is NOT the best way to remove toxins. I run a catfish farm, and have been having trouble with the breeding stage. The fish die off after between 6 or 14 days. weve always used direct flow through, borehole water, but i suspect the water comes in with some toxins. now i want to change to a recirculatory system. what then can i put in the filter that will remove toxins? locally i can get zeolite, and also calcite. will they help?

I have a white film on the inside of my tank. It is on the front and back panel glass. Razor blade won't work. Makes the tank "look" cloudy, but it isn't. Any ideas?

I had been told that soaking dried coral in tap water for 24-48 hours would be enough to clean the coral? I now have been instructed differently? Any suggestions?

My husband purchased an acrylic 55 gallon tank. We put crushed coral in the bottom and are running a Magnum 350 filter. We started cycling our tank and purchased 6 rather small damsels. They did great for 4 days.
Last night my husband put in some dried coral to the tank. It has been soaked to insure that dust and things were not attached. We got up this morning and all six were dead? What happened?

You are supposed to add one tablespoon of salt to every gallon right?

2007-04-04 15:22:26 · 10 answers · asked by sharp_shooter 4

I have a female betta and 3 male guppies in a 5 gallon tank. They are doing well and get along great, but all reputable articles are saying to add freshwater salt for gills, electrolytes, and disease prevention for both of these fish. The problem is that all of the snails and sucker fish I know of won't tolerate the salt. It is a newly just cycled tank so Algae isn't a problem yet. The debate is whether to add salt for the health of current fish or don't so I can get a sucker or snail for algae that should soon begin developing. Should I add the salt and use tank magnet to clean algae, or should I not add salt so I can add an oto catfish or snail. Not a fan of algae chemicals but never used them. I don't like adding any chemicals unless necessary. Not sure what is best? Any opinions from experienced fish keepers?

Swims low and remains at bottom most of the day, eats little, looks depressed, no physical symtoms-Floats up and lets its body fall down and lays sideways sometimes at the bottom. Ocassionaly spazes out. But no popeye or no bloating no fin rot nothing just what was mentioned. Not sure if male or female have had for 2 years. We keep water clean and feed him every day and fasts usually 1 or 2 days a week-lives in a bowl. Is there anything I can do?
