i have 3 tanks. one tropical and two coldwater, a small 5 gallon with betta and oto and some shrimp, a 10 gall trop with 3 platies and one baby peacock eel, and a coldwater 29 gal natvie tank. iwas wondering if i should even use the same gravel vac on my native tank or get a new one. i dont want my other two tanks to get sick from same water as my native tank. should i just wash it really good with tap after i clean the native tank, or should i do some dish soap and make sure i clean it good of all the soap out?

Thanks

i am thinking that my goldfish is probably going to die *sniffle* soon despite my efforts to figure out what exactly he has (stupid fircking walmart!!! learn how to take care of cute innocent fisshies!!!!!!!) after he does (if he does...i'm still hoping he won't!!!) i'm going to get a betta. however, i'll need to treat this tank to get rid of whatever my goldie has....i plan on throwing away all the gravel/plants that are in the tank now, cleaning everything obbsessively with salt water, and keeping the water at a very high temperature and treating it with ick away. my question is, how long should i do this for before it'd be safe for me to put a new fish in? and does getting rid of everything currently in the tank with infected fish after (if he should) it dies work very well, along with continuing to treat the water sound like it would make the tank safe for a new fish? i know i've been asking a lot of questions, but i'm very inexperienced when it comes to caring for non-mammals..

My 55 gallon tank has been set up for about a month. The first two weeks it cycled with no fish, and for the last two and a half weeks it has been cycling with zebra danios. They are doing great, but my ammonia level has been hanging around .5. My question isn't so much about bringing the ammonia down (I know my tank is still cycling), but about test kits. I decided to search through the old questions on here to see what some people have recommended for ammonia adjustment and I came across a question that dealt with test kits. Then searching for just test kit questions only produced two questions out of the 150 I looked at, so I'm going to ask it to get everyone's updated opinion.

What are the best test kits to use in aquariums?

I am looking for the best in ease of use, accuracy, shelf life, etc. I currently use a test kit from Petsmart. I can't remember the name off hand (it starts with an M...like Marcin or Maracin...something like that). Test strips.

I've had my Purpley red male betta for about a year now. When I first got him I had him in a small tank then my boyfriend and I got him a bigger tank. He has small stones and some plants and a lil place to hide in. We even got him a heater. He loved the new tank and the new fish food we had gotten him. Then about a week ago (after sping break) I noticed he wasn't eatting and he spends most of his day either at the top near the heater or on his plant he likes to sleep in at night. This isn't like him. Usually during the day he swims about and when I come near him he swims to greet me. He knows when it's time to eat and when he sees me then he comes and waits for me to put the food in. Now he doesn't do that he just floats around, usually jsut laieing in the plant. I'm worried. It's almost like he is depressed. His color hasn't changed at all and he doesn't seem to have cuts or any abnormality on him. I fear for the worst but I want to remian hopefull. Can someone help please?

I need a complete list of common names for freshwater and saltwater
fish and other living creatures (inverts, corals, live rock, live
plants) that one would purchase for a home aquarium. A good starting
place for answers is saltwaterfish.com, about.com.

The list needs to be in simple text format with one listing per line. Each
name should be capitalized like this:

(Example:)

Bahama Starfish
Blue Urchin
Pencil Urchin
Bubble Tip Anemone

And so forth . . .

Thanks.

They are breeding on a desk (in the tank of course) next to my computer...my male has blown a bubble nest and chasing the female around..(poor female...her fins are all ripped...just fins tho..)I put them together yesterday and they've been nipping chasing and hiding for the whole day. The male just keeps building its nest. Anyways, my main quesion is:
1. Will me being here using the computer and watching over them effect their mood of spawning? (like interupt them or they might not want to spawn cause I'm typing so loud here or me watching...)?
2. my male is still nipping at the female and she just keeps running off and hiding...how long will it take before they actually spawn and how do I know that they are actually going to? The male is alot gentle now than yesterday and the female seems to be alittle more comfortable.

I don't know if you've heard that putting peas in a goldfish bowl will keep them alive for longer, but...why?

Is this true? What is it with the peas that actually helps?

The tank is 29 Gal. and i want discus and live plants what plants would be good for the tank and what other fish should I get? What light levels are best for discus and can I have an electric blue freshwater crayfish with a few discus in the tank? should I get snails or a different tank cleaner? I hear plecos tend to suck the slime off of a discus is this true? What should the water readings be for discus cuz I have learned they are demanding fish and what tests should I do before I add fish? What is the best way to cycle the tank? I am looking this stuff up on the net but finding more advertisements than information, sorry this question is so involved.

i believe there is up to 1 ppm of ammonia in our tap water. I have a male betta in a large bowl (i know i need a tank, but no money right now) but it has no filter. I check water daily to make sure ammonia NEVER rises about 1ppm for him, but i was wondering.. i know you can cycle a big tank with a filter, but can small amounts of the bacteria grow on the walls of the bowl or gravel or plactic plants? maybe enough to lower the ammonia less that 1 ppm? If i only change half the water, and don't scrub the bowl or anything could it possibly grow? I say this because i've been doing this for almost a week, and i noticed that there was finally a drop in ammonia to 0.50 ppm. Is my little plan working or is there another reason for the drop?

i know i could put stuff in there to lower ammonia, but i'm affraid to keep putting it in there all the time...

oh, and everytime i add new water, i make sure to put in water conditioner also. should i maybe invest in some to lower ammonia also?

I have a Penguin with Bio-wheel and just put in new filter sheets (or something like that) and it said that they contain carbon to help remove ammonia. I keep trying to do a fishless cycle, but as soon as i put ammonia in it, the filter removes it! i think right now the ammonia is at 4ppm ( it was at 7 last night) Is that normal when trying to cycle a tank for the first time, or is it because of my filter?
