I've had 3 spotted puffers [brackish], 2 baby Figure-8's [brackish], and a turtle that i just upgraded into the 20 gallon tank.
I just got into planted aquariums, and so i made a scenery that looked as natural as possible. I got tiles that you can get at any do-it-yourself department stores, like home depot, or lowes, which cost me about $20, and used a hammer and a screwdriver to break them into pieces. I brought them home and washed them with warm/hot water, and wiped them dry. My intentions are to make a waterfall, using the filter as the main water source.
After breaking all the pieces, i bought 3 large tubes of Silicone which costs about $6 each, and glued them together. [I piled the long pieces together on the top, and 3 small perches to hold up the top piece. I recommend letting it sit for at least 2 days before adding water.
If you're into plants, i'm using plant gravel called Fluorite, there's also another brand by Coralife but so far, the brand Fluorite works just fine. I bought this at Petsmart for about $15.
After the rock and silicone has dried off, i placed them into the tank, then a bag of sand [$5] and mixed Fluorite in it. I then added water. I find that before you add the sand and Fluorite, rinsing them makes a huge difference in cloudyness of the water. Then add plants.
Run your filter for about a day, and then add fishes & a turtle if you'd like. Now, not only do the fishes have a huge place to swim, the turtle has an even bigger place to explore and sit above the water, all without taking away from the beauty of nature.
Enjoy your tank!

I have an 18 gallon extra high (same footprint as a 10 gallon but almost twice as tall) that I kept a red tail catfish and a tiger shovelnose catfish in until they were large enough to move into the 55 gallon. Now I mainly just use it as a quarantine tank for new fish.
