I don't know if you've heard that putting peas in a goldfish bowl will keep them alive for longer, but...why?

Is this true? What is it with the peas that actually helps?

Peas don't actually make your fish live loner. Peas, as well as other green veggies, like cukes, lettuce, green beans are good for your fish. This also helps to keep their swim bladders in tip top shape as well as keeping them regular.

Gold fish also like oranges. The vit . c in an orange is good for their immune system as well as their color.

Also, just an FYI goldfish will not stop growing over the course of their lives, which can be in excess of 30 years. Average common gold fish will grow around 12 inches. they require a lot of dissolved oxygen, which is why they are pond fish. (not that gold fish don't do well in tanks. Thousands of homes have goldfish in tanks) Glass Goldfish bowls were invented for county fairs so the participant can see the fish they wanted to try to win. Marketers capped on this idea. Gold fish were used since they were so hearty.

First off a goldfish shouldn't ever be in a bowl and if it were in one feeding it peas or anything else for that matter isn't going to make it live longer, but onto your question. Peas act as a laxative so if a fish is constipated then it will help make them go potty. A lot of goldfish owners will give them peas once a week to help keep them regular.

To the person below me,
goldfish should not be in bowls for a few reasons, the main one is because they are way too small and if the fish doesn't get poisoned to death from the high ammonia it will eventually become stunted and die an even more painful death from its insides getting more and more cramped. Miss B, goldfish grow to over a foot long and can live 20 to 30 years. Why shouldn't you put them in a bowl? Because it stunts their growth and life, and it's an irresponsible thing to do this. Some people consider it 'growing to the size of their tank', and if this makes them feel better that's fine - ignorance is bliss.

First post is correct, it's basically a laxitive and too much can actually cause problems. Peas should be given occasionally at most, or if you notice constipation problems.

I have had a fish for about a year and i would recommend a tank, even just a small one. Well, anyway, i fed my fish a pea per night because he likes them and they are good for their digestive system. WHen feeding you fish, though, make sure it will not choke on the pea, so remove the sin and try to mash it with your fingers before feeding it a pea.

umm, in response to the above answer.. why shouldn't a goldfish be in a bowl ??? especially when they're called "goldfish bowls"... oops...
anyways.... no, I can safely say I have NEVER heard of putting peas in a goldfish bowl... you'd have to think the peas would just get mushy and make the water gross.
