I've had my Purpley red male betta for about a year now. When I first got him I had him in a small tank then my boyfriend and I got him a bigger tank. He has small stones and some plants and a lil place to hide in. We even got him a heater. He loved the new tank and the new fish food we had gotten him. Then about a week ago (after sping break) I noticed he wasn't eatting and he spends most of his day either at the top near the heater or on his plant he likes to sleep in at night. This isn't like him. Usually during the day he swims about and when I come near him he swims to greet me. He knows when it's time to eat and when he sees me then he comes and waits for me to put the food in. Now he doesn't do that he just floats around, usually jsut laieing in the plant. I'm worried. It's almost like he is depressed. His color hasn't changed at all and he doesn't seem to have cuts or any abnormality on him. I fear for the worst but I want to remian hopefull. Can someone help please?

Perhaps your schedule change during the break made you not care for the fish as regularly as usual. Check the water quality and temperature. Do a small water change. Feed a different food, esp. some live food;worms, for a few days.

You could try putting a mirror next to his tank for a little while every day to make him flare and give him something to do.

....fish are supposed to have a slime layer, it protects them, please don't go touching him....or putting him in a small tank.

Check your nitrate, nitrite, and pH levels.Sometimes those abnormal levels can do something to your fish or it just may be old though probably not. Hope this helps.

Get him out of the big tank and put him in the smallest tank possible. These fish love small tanks.

Check the Ph balance of your water, and also check his body for any amount of slime, if there is any amount of slime present, treat the tank with "ICK".
