I went to the ripoff pet store a couple of minutes ago and bought the healthiest looking beta, but when i got home it wasnt looking so good. Its trying not to float to the top like its got air in it or something. I need to know if I can save it and what to do if i can.

Fresh clean water is probably the best thing you can dofor hi right now. if he's trying to float to the surface it's not a good sign at all. it could be one of two things wrong, a ssim bladder infection or constipation. Try not feeding him for a day and see if it's better. If not give him part of a shelled pea to eat. If that doesn't help it's the infection and probably too late to save the fish honestly.
Personally, I would return it right now given the choice. Sounds like you need a new pet store and also I would say never buy a fish that doesn't seem perfectly healthy, that's just asking for trouble.

First a few questions (if you answer them, I will check back or email them to me)

What kind of set up do you have for it? Is it in a small betta home or vase? Those are not suitabel environments and are basically betta killers.

Bettas prefer water that is 75° F althuogh they will survive in room temperature water. Any big water temperature change will come as a shock to the betta so you needed to float the bag in his new tank for at least 20 minues, slowly adding the new water into the old.

If you think it is a rip off pet store, then probably it wasn't a healthy betta in the first place. Try to look for places that do not keeo their bettas in little plastic cups, but have actual little aquariums. Ideally a betta out of a community display tank is the healthiest and best.

My guess is it was the shock of the trip. If it dies, bring it back to the store with a sample of your aquarium water

Why did you buy a fish at a ripoff pet store? THey stick their bettas in these itty bitty containers that get so dirty. He was probably ill to begin with and the trip pushed him over the edge. You never know though, he might bounce back. Try putting him in some fresh water in a bigger container.

If they have a refund policy and it dies within that time, bring it back with the water you bought it in.

if it was just a few minutes ago, possibly the temperature of the water he was in at the store wasn't an exact match to the temp in his new home. if he's floating near the top on his side or back, though, i'd look into possible swimbladder issues or the like.
do check out bettatalk.com though - good advise if you aren't familiar with these fish!

no,
bettas r the worst pet fish 2 have there treated unfairy by being kept in small tanks after being tooken out of ponds and people think they can save them by buying them but that makes a demand 4 them. 2 be honest i think ur fish will die because of the poor treatment petshops keep there fish and other animals. places like petsmart and petco r 1 of the most animal abusing petshops in the u.s.a i sugects u look up some fish care and if it dies please reconsider a new typ of fish from a pet friendly petshop.

Beta fish are weird and a lot of them do that. Don't worry about it.

Sometimes one of my bettas does that two. He's been doing it for along time and hes fine. Just watch him. There is nothing you can really do, but I'm sure he will be fine.
