They surely can. Just be careful that the flow on the filter you buy can be adjusted. Male bettas' long fins don't allow them to swim quickly, so you don't want yours being blown around by the overflow from the filter or sucked up against the strainer and have his fins torn.

I hate when people ask this.. >=( OF course bettas need a filtered tank! In fact ALL fish need a tank with a filter. That's a stereotype-that bettas don't need a filter or big home. They do! If not they will live way shorter lives than they are intended for. The levels of ammonia And it is less hassle for the owner. There are partially less frequent water changes-from once every three days to a better once a week. And the fish lives longer-everyone is happy. especially the fish. Hope this helps.

A small filter,a sponge filter with an air pump ,or a small internal filter are fine. They don.t need a lot of in-water oxygen or a lot of water or space. They prefer slow-moving.not wavy water.

With a filter? Sure! I have a 10 gallon planted tank that includes a BEAUTIFUL Betta, Tetra and Pleco. :) Good luck and Happy Fishkeeping!

YES, ALL A FILTER DOES IS PROVIDE OXYGEN IN THE WATER/KEEPS WATER FAIRLY CLEAN. BETA FISH ARE SOMETIMES PLACED IN A BOWL OR VASE WITH A PLANT THAT GROWS IN WATER. IT'S THE SAME CONCEPT, PLANT PROVIDES WATER WITH OXYGEN. IT JUST DOESN'T USE ELECTRICITY.

they can but they will do better w/o one. if it is with other fish make sure they are not going to try to attack the fins, it may happen evenif the others are smaller

Yes, they just don't need it. But it won't hurt them.
