Fish - December 2006

Ok so I have a big tank with assorted freshwater fish and a littler one that I am going to use for breeding. Which fish should I use? How should I treat the water? What do I do to get some babies?!

I just posted a question like a week or so if my betta was sick! It wouldn't swim as much, wouldn't eat at all, and had lost some colour. Now he hasn't moved from one corner of the fish bowl, has developed a really scary big white spot in the middle of his eyeballs, some disgusting white cloudy things are hanging from his mouth and all around the fish bowl, and his fins have turned a dark blue, maybe black colour and they look shorter!! What is wrong with it!? It hasn't moved for 2 days straight!!! IS IT DEAD?? If it was dead wouldn't it have floated to the top??

a few days ago a neighbour i hardly know asked if i would take in his catfish as he wanted the room for new furniture i agreed and he came with the fish and just dumped it in my 50gal tank with my very healthy fancy goldfish,it darted about the tank at great speed i was a bit concerned so i found a small tank which i left overnight so that i could remove the catfish into it.next moning when i turned my light on i got a terrible shock as my fish were covered in blood it was as if every vein in their body had burst and their beatiful tails and fins torn to shreds i went right away to the pet store and they said it was finrot but they were very happy and healthy before,could this really happen so quickly? i was given meds and did w/changes eveyday that was 4 days ago this morning ihave spent hours empting the tank as all 7 have now died and i have since learnt his goldfish all died so why did he just dump it in my tank with the water from his fish.he is not at all bothered,

Between water changes i slowly get a buildup of a green dust like algae on the glass and the pebbles. It rubs off easily with a cloth, but i can never get rid of it out of the water. After a week or so it slowly comes back. I do two weekly changes of water, and all is balanced ok, although i can't reduce the nitrate any lower than 40 due to tap water levels. Lighting is on for eight hours/day and water is well aerated, with external power filter.

Thought i'd beat it over time, but have failed.

I'm UK based :)

My friend has two freshwater shrimp in his aqarium. One has lost its right arm, the one with the feathered feeding tools. Will those grow back, and can it live with only one arm?

Just yesterday i purchased 2 new suckers and 2 black fish (i dont know it name but its fully black with a mouth that seems like a frog - the pet shop told me its the gold fish variety). one of the black fish is constantly after the sucker and i just noticed the skin of the sucker has been pulled out .. the suckers is quite big but damn lazy, even when the black fish pecks at it is doesnt move. what could b the reason? will the pet shop take the fish back? I have 3 catfishes and 4 other fishes of the gold fish family but not excatly gold fishes.

Hi! I just recently bought a few new fish for my tank and I want to know a couple of things:

1) I have 2 Kissing Gourami's named Romeo & Juliet, 2 Calico Fantails named Blossom and Ying, a Chinese Algea eater named Bruce and two Black Moors..one named yang and the other is nameless. My first question is..Do fish play? I see my Gourami's chasing each other around the tank one minute, and then floatin around together the next..is it some form of tag? the other fish do it too..

2) My second question is about my nameless Black Moor. He is a beautiful gold color, but with a black strip that goes from the tip of his lip..all the way down his back and out through his entire tail. It looks like he swam under the tip of a black paintbrush and got the rest on his tail..Lol..The tips of his fins are black as well..the rest a bright gold. I have NO Idea what to name him! Any Suggestions?

I have a one gallon fish tank...somebody told me that you have to change only 20% of water in the tank so the good bacteria stays in. How much is 20%? (Is it half of the tank, almost to the top, how much?) And if my newborn fish has enough space in its tank, do you need an air pump even though?

I think my gourami's are eating my other fish, over the months i have had 4 tiger barbs, 4 cherry barbs, 2 bala sharks, 1 small tank frog, and 1 sucker fish, all of the cherry barbs disapeared, 2 tiger barbs disapeared, the frog and, and the sucker fish also disapeared, every other fish is still in my tank. I have 2 male gouramies, and they are driving me nuts, what should i do?

so i got some plants from a petstore, and after a few days i started seeing little snails! At first i saw two and i got them both out and flushed um! But i keep on finding more! Any ways to get rid of them without hurting my freshwater fish?(besides waiting till they go on the side of the aquarium and flushing um down teh toilet)
