a few days ago a neighbour i hardly know asked if i would take in his catfish as he wanted the room for new furniture i agreed and he came with the fish and just dumped it in my 50gal tank with my very healthy fancy goldfish,it darted about the tank at great speed i was a bit concerned so i found a small tank which i left overnight so that i could remove the catfish into it.next moning when i turned my light on i got a terrible shock as my fish were covered in blood it was as if every vein in their body had burst and their beatiful tails and fins torn to shreds i went right away to the pet store and they said it was finrot but they were very happy and healthy before, could this really happen so quickly? i was given meds and did w/changes eveyday that was 4 days ago this morning ihave spent hours empting the tank as all 7 have now died and i have since learnt his goldfish all died so why did he just dump it in my tank with the water from his fish.he is not at all bothered,

No rewards for the premature deaths but I believe that you have learnt your lesson. Your neighbour was completely wrong to put a catfish in with any others, it appears to me that he knew what would happen but it was the easy option for him. The damaged veins were bruising where they had bashed themselves trying to get away from the catfish. Your pet shop should have told you about the catfish, some are actually illegal now and as lovely as they look are lethal and cunning when amongst other fish. They definitely need to be on their own or with their own kind.

That's Tragic ! That's the last thing you would have wanted..!What i Reckon went wrong is that you Agreed with a neighbour you hardly knew to take his catfish off his hands with out knowing the Relevant facts of how this catfish lives..! for example the catfish may have come from a Tropical fish tank in which i can understand it being stressed and aggressive due to the sudden change of water temperature, although most catfish can live in all kinds of water conditions its the Major change that would more likely trigger its behaviour...As people have said its unlikely to be fin-rot as it can take days before you see the major effect of the rot..its an easy answer for any Aquarium shopkeepers to say oh yeah its this and that but really they wouldn't be sure either and may give you wrong advice on medications etc...All ways get an All round Medication that covers most diseases,That works for me ..But then again if it was From a cold water tank then it seems like You have a Murdering Catfish who loves goldfish tails and fins etc due to The UN caring neighbour...Hope you learn ya lesson ..find out as much about any fish before you purchase or take freebies as you never know..!!! Good luck in future Tanks...

Hi,I have been keeping tropical fish for ten years & you get attached to them.I know how you feel I had 3 clown loaches for 9
years for no reason 2 died it must be age yet the other one seems okay. What your neighbour done is dreadful.Finrot can be treated quickly I use esha 2000.If you decide to get more fish always keep treatments in case of emergency,I am truely sorry for your loss.I would want to kill him.Have you still got the catfish
I rehomed one.it too also darted everywhere he created havoc however he has now settled down & has a lovely nature. They do not hurt other fish.Fin rot will have been brought in water & the cat fish may have had it.Your fish will have stressed out which will have made the finrot spread so fast.

I'm really sorry to hear this. How big was this catfish? I haven't heard of catfish attacking other fish before. It cant be fin rot, that wouldnt come on so quickly i dont think. Keep the catfish til this neighbour comes back, give him his fish and tell him what happened and try to make him see what he has done (altho it sounds like u would be wasting ur breath as he has no regards to the safety of animals). Once his catfish has gone, u can buy more goldfish.

what type of catfish was it?
the catfish might have cause all that damage to your fish... It was eating the goldfish's tail... maybe trying to eat the goldfish.
definitely separate the catfish asap.
and put a tablespoon of aquarium salt per 5 gallons of water... This will help the fish heal and keep away parasites. Do weekly partial water change to keep the tank clean. Your goldfish will recover from this stressful situation.
it's not tail rot...
and tell your neighbor to give you his tank so you can put his fish in.
and for future reference... don't put strange fish or things into the tank without research or quarantine.

There are quite a few aggressive catfish.
here is a list of catfish:
http://www.liveaquaria.com/product/scateg.cfm?pCatId=1163
you can look through and find the one that resembles yours.
Another cat. I know that is agressive is the chinese algae eater:

If I were you, I would go to your neighbors place and give him back his catfish and ask him to pay for your goldfish. Before that, go to the local pet store and look for a fancy goldfish about the same size as yours, look at the price. Write it down. And ask him to pay full price, or half.
Another possibility is to sell the cat. to a petstore that is willing to take it.

Thats strange I have not her of fin rot killing so fast! Nor have I herd of a catfish attacking other fish.
Maybe his water was full of bad stuf and it killed your fish?
I would show him what happened and ask for money to replace your fish!

That was really rude of him. I would make him repay you for all your fish that have died and any money you spent on trying to cure your fish.
