Fish - December 2006

i am at college, i have a five gallon tank with one beta in it, winter break is coming up and i am trying to figure out what is the best thing to do with the tank, i am going to take the fish back in a bowl, but it is too inconvienient to take the tank back with everything, i dont want to kill off all of the good bacteria in the tank, and i dont want it to get filthy, i will be gone for three weeks, should i just let the tank sit ful with water, empty the water out partially, or what? the power is shut off to the rooms, so i cant keep the filter or the bio wheel running.

Due to drought conditions here in Australia, we cannot top up the pool so it has just been sitting, slowly evaporating and will eventually be a water source for my plants. But in the meantime, it has become a breeding ground for mosquitoes and other creepy crawlies. I tested the water and the ph is sky high, but I wanted to put goldfish in there to eat the bugs that are now feeding on us at night. I have chemicals that are used to treat water for swimming, but i don't think it would be safe for goldfish. What can I use to lower the ph that is safe for the goldfish, that won't cost too much, keeping in mind that there is around 20,000 litres of water?

I have one angel fish in a 4 foot fish tank along with other "community" fish. The tank is quite settled so is it a good idea to add a second and does male or female matter?
And how do you tell the difference?

My brother gave my 5 year old as a birthday present, a 10 gallon fish tank with a heater, thermometer, filter, cover, gravel, artificial plants and a gift certificate at a pet store. I have not set it up yet. What steps should I take first and what kind of fish are best with the above. My daughter really likes goldfish, but we are open to suggestions. Your help will be appreciated.
Thank you

My betta (a young male) has very light brown eyes (almost a yellowish- brownish- tannish hard to describe color) and his eyes actually SHINE in light and even in the dark... almost like a cat's eyes! Is it common for bettas to have eyes like that? I've never seen any other betta besides him have it...

I got 2 algae eaters 2 days ago, and 1 of them died. I'm wondering if the last one could have babies. I THINK the algae eater is a Siamese algae eater. Please answer soon with many details!!

its an angel fish , he is several years old and i don't want him to die.
he occasionaly gets into fights with the other fish and has had several injuries but has always survived.
this time he seems to have broken the first 2 or 3 bones on his main fin near to the base.

The top front half of his fin now seems losely attached and wobbles about quite a bit especially when he goes near to the fast water. There is also one of the small fin bones sticking out sideways.

However he seems to be swimming about just fine and eating normally and has been like this for a week now.

is there any way i can fix it or will it heal/grow back by its self?
