you have planaria worms they are a type of flatworm which wont kill your fish but they will annoy them and cause discomfort in their gills and such the presence of these worms in your tank is telling you it cannot handle the amount of waste and uneaten food in the tank keep this in mind your filter should be cycling the water in your tank a minimum of 6 times per hour so a 55 gallon tank filter should be rated at about 360 gph (gallons per hour) bottom line is upgrade your filtration you should always go much higher then what they say is required

This sounds like a case of Planaria. Planaria are flatworms, related to flukes and tapeworms. They are quite small, and if examined closely have eyespots as well as protrusions from the sides of their heads.

Although they do not harm fish, they love to feast on eggs, and therefore are dangerous if breeding egglaying fish.

The Real Problem
Even though Planaria do not harm fish, they are an indicator that the aquarium has a problem. They require a food source, which means there must be excess food wastes in the tank to support them.

I beleve bextersmo is correct I just recomend you feed your fish a little less!! that might help! I had something like this in my taink, and my fish also ate them.. Mine was from over feeding ( 8 year old brother likes to FEED THEM LOTS OF food) so that was the cause of mine!

and you can try a couple of taink cleanings?

Hope you get rid of your problem!

i had maggots throughout my city garbage can very last summer season. i filled a sprig bottle with bleach and sprayed the heck out of them. after about an hour they were all useless. so i took the hose and sprayed all of them in the route of the drain interior the line. then i bleached out the garbage can so as that they does not come decrease back. so a techniques so good! you also ought to opt for to call the city about the grass next door, because there must be a useless animal in there this is the position they could be coming from.
