Algae does not look pretty but it help keep your tank healthy. The algae eats the bad fish waste and releases not so harmful waste. You can go to your pet store and invest in a scraping tool that will scrape the algae off of the glass. Scrape the algae off of the front and the sides, but leave it on the back. Also buy an algae eater fish or snail. If your tank receives a lot of sun the algae will grows twice as fast. The fish have algae in their system. It is almost impossible to get rid of it completely. So, use it to help your tank.
Algae growth is inevitable in an aquarium.
Algae consume nutrients in the aquarium that if allowed to accumulate, are harmful to fish. Algae can be a good thing.
The presence of green algae in an aquarium indicates a healthy environment for fish.
There is absolutely no way to completely prevent algae from growing in an aquarium, without killing the other life in the tank.
Chemicals should never be used to control the growth of true algae in an aquarium, and should only be used in rare circumstances to control cyanobacteria.
Correcting a severe algae problem requires time and patience.
Natural methods of controlling algae are the best and most effective.

If you leave it alone it will go everywhere, so you should get algae eaters. I have two algae eaters a plecustomus and a Chinese algae eater. There are some others like a Siamese algae eater. You can get them at Walmart or Meijer.

Cut back on the amount of light the tank is receiving, especially bright sunlight. You can clean the algae off with a razor blade, but don't forget that bright light -- cut it down.

Roll up your sleeves. Scrub, change water according to recommended exchanges and talk to the folks at the local pet store to see what you need to treat the water with. Better ask about some snails and other algae eaters too.

Clean it really good first, then get algae cleaner and invest in a sucker fish / tank cleaner. they eat all the algae off the tank and rocks. Also make sure you have a good, not cheap, filter system.

You need to go to the pet store and but some solutions for the water.
You can also empty out the tank and fill it with bleach and water but be sure to rinse it very well before putting fish in it again.
