Are there any rocks that I should avoid when "decorating" a fishtank

I think that depends on the fish you plan to put in! Some fish need a sandy bottom and others you need larger rocks but the small aquarum rocks you buy at your pet store should just be find!! (make sure you clean them your slef!)

If you need any more help, feel free to contact me!

All of the other answers are true, but I wanted to add one thing! Any rocks you get at a pet store or Fish store will most likely be relatively safe to use. Just make sure that they aren't jagged or sharp rocks. I have a large I.D Shark, and he got a little over-excited one day...he ended up swimming face first into it when he got freaked out. He now have a huge scar on the top of his head. He was lucky because a lot of fish can die from running into or scratching against rocks that are TOO sharp and pointy!

Yes, rocks that have veins runing through them you should avoid. Htey have many different chemicals in them that can throw the balance of your water off. Also if your rock reacts to vineger then these types of rocks should also be avoided. If they start to fizz or foam then they have traces of unwanted minerals in them. Note that after you test the rocks with vinegar then you should thoroughly rinse them (you should do that even if you havent used vinegar, always rinse your rocks before you use them.)

First, never any rocks that have been in salt water, it cannot be cleaned out and will kill freshwater fish. Other rocks, I agree with other answerers, a good way to sterilize them is to put them in a low oven for a couple of hours.

avoid rocks that are contaminated with chemicals, herbicides, pesticides.... and really 'basic' rocks like limestone. pour some vinegar on the rock to see if it fizzes. That means it has some base elements in it that will change the PH of your water... You don't want that... You want neutral rocks, like slate, granite etc...

Obviously, wash your rock before putting it in your aqaurium... Wash with hot, salted water.. That'll sterilize it from parasites and such.

Avoid gravel that's painted...The finish will eventually come off the rocks and will cause headaches when you go to clean the tank.
