its an angel fish , he is several years old and i don't want him to die.
he occasionaly gets into fights with the other fish and has had several injuries but has always survived.
this time he seems to have broken the first 2 or 3 bones on his main fin near to the base.

The top front half of his fin now seems losely attached and wobbles about quite a bit especially when he goes near to the fast water. There is also one of the small fin bones sticking out sideways.

However he seems to be swimming about just fine and eating normally and has been like this for a week now.

is there any way i can fix it or will it heal/grow back by its self?

The best way to heal damaged or torn fins is to keep the water clean. You can add salt to the tank (1 tsp per gal) to reduce the chance of infection, and I believe Melafix will also promote fin and tissue regrowth. You could also quarantine him (put him in a separate tank) to reduce stress. This will also eliminate any other fish picking on him. When you say the "main fin" I assume that you are talking about the dorsal fin? I'm not sure if it will just grow back, but keeping the water clean with weekly waterchanges, should be your best bet.

Unfortunately the fin will not grow back and there is no way to fix this, make sure the tank it is in is an enviroment where it is peacefull and not fighting too much as fish are stressed very easily and this can have fatal results examples of stressing fish to them are Siamese fighting fish (or Japanese ones), Guppies, Silver sharks, Disccus's, Pirhanna's and so on

all fish fight with the other fish .if he is swimming around all right and eating i say he will be fine.if he starts to go on his back and stays like that then that means there is something rong.it should heal it self.

Usually people don't take fishies to the vet, but you might want to for an injury like this on such a special fishy.
