Forget about the pond, please. It is illegal to take a fish from a wild pond. So unless you're going fishing in someone's goldfish pond, it's not legal.

Go to the petstore if you want to find fish. There are too many to list. Guppies, top minnows (killiefish), tetras, rasboras, corydoras, goldfish etc etc.
Saltwater fish are more expensive, but Damselfish are inexpensive.
As I say, just go to your petstore.

However, by just pretending you're doing this project, you're condoning such behaviour. I think you're passing up a great opportunity to teach people about the importance of proper fishkeeping and of not experimenting with fish. Did you know that most SW fish are taken straight from the ocean? The oceans ARE being depleted of creatures.
Frankly, if I were your teacher, I would be very impressed by a student who can think for themselves and come out with a much more independant and complete knowledge base.
