I keep bettas and often have the juvvies in 1 gal tanks WITH A HEATER. 50 watts is too strong for a small tank (usually you use those for a 20 gal. tank). You'll need a 25 watt submersible--I use Visi-Therm Stealth heaters (black plastic so they don't break)--or less depending on how warm your room stays and what kind of fish it is (different fish have different temperature requirements). The bigger fish stores (not pet stores) sell a very small heater that raises the temp only 3-5 degrees. Just make sure to get a good one because the cheaper ones have a tendency to fail when you aren't around to save your fish. Take your 50w back to the store and trade it in for a lower wattage.

the package to my heater says 5 watts per gallon of water. but most fish can live in cold water, pretty sure it's around 66 that starts getting too cold. you should stick a thermometer in there and also look up that fish to see it's ideal temp.

I don't believe you can put a heater in a tank under 5 gals without overheating. Ask the pet store.

definite, the sunshine will come on while the heating element is working and pass off while that is not. you may get a thermometer to your tank so as which you will possibly be particular the heater is working how this is meant to.

Actually, most fish should have temps of 76F+. They won't die from temps of 70F, but they will be weak, and they will likely develop fungus or finrot or some other terrible disease.

However, 2 gallons is not hard to heat. Try moving it closer to a lamp :)
