It really depends on the size, what filtration you plan on having and how many water changes you would like to do. In a topical tank you can usually have more fish and schooling fish are pretty cool to look at but goldfish come in so many different types and colors now too and they grow into amazing looking fish. I have both so I can't really pick one over the other but which would you rather look at everyday?

Depending on the size of the tank, you probably waht tropical community as goldfish- even fancys- can get very big(fancys reach 8 inches if allowed). Tropical community fish are active and beautifu. be cautious when adding plants tho, as you may get pond snails (in this case get a clown loach). With tropical fish you can have a wide variety wheras goldfish you cannot, the faster fish would cause slower fancies to starve.

If you go tropical, you have many more varieties of fish to choose from, unless you want to specialize in goldfish with the coldwater tank.

What size is the fish tank?
Gold fish need really large tanks.
That being said, I prefer tropical warm water tanks because of the great variety you can put in them!
You can check out www.aquahobby.com for more help on stocking your fish tank.

Well, a lot of times, tropical or salt water fish are more colorful, but from what I have heard, the tanks are a lot of trouble to upkeep. So I guess it would be up to you to decide how much work you want to put into it. We plan on getting a tank soon, but are planning on getting a freshwater tank.

the first question i have to you is, how old are you. if you are under 14 or 15 then i would suggest a regular goldfish tank to start with, you can incorporate other types of fish into this tank, but you should have a heater also in this tank, fish do better if kept at a constant temp.
salt water tanks are beautiful but you must have lots of knowledge, study hard before starting one of these. good luck, john

I would rather have a tropical tank because it would be nice to swim around in a nice warm tank, although it might drive me crazy and I would get uncomfortable with the temperature and so i might want a cold water one, but again i would get bothered... what about room temperature??? that would work, the fish might not be as picky as me though.....
