They poop like you wouldn't believe but since they are small it doesn't really add too much, unless you have a ton of snails. They don't eat waste so they do nothing for that but they are usually good at keeping the tank clean of algae, you still need to feed them because algae is more of a snack and not their main diet. Here is a site you can check out if you want to know more about them, http://applesnail.net/

I have had quite a few apple snails in my tanks over the years. They are good for cleaning the glass and stopping algae from growing on the walls. They are defiantly cleaner than they are messy. I did have one problem a few years ago. I have a 60 gallon tank and at the time a had a magnum 3000 water filter. Some how my apple snail reproduced and the eggs ended up in the filter. Since I only had to change it about once a month I did not notice the baby snails. There were literally hundreds of baby snails no bigger than the head of a pin living in the filter sleeve. I tried to save them but there was little I could do. The worse news was that I never could get rid of the snails completely. Every time I changed the filter it was full of baby snails. I eventually had to get a whole new filter system. I think this was a rarity and I probably did something wrong. I was in my late teens when that happened. Now I would never have a tank without a snail they are defiantly beneficial.
