Dogs - October 2007

I live on a farm out in the country. I have two rat terriors dogs. Yesterday (Oct 13), I was gone to the Twin Cities, and got home at about late afternoon. While I was gone, my dogs had mated, I could tell when I looked at my female dog Jackie. The problem is that Jackie is only 9 months and 5 days old. What should I do? She is a long and skinny dog. No should I be giving her a more protein filled dog food? Also, DON'T TELL ME TO SPAY OR NEUTER MY DOGS! Because I'm not going to! Just give me some advice on my situation. I never intended for this to happen, so don't say I'm a horrible owner.

Elroy was a coonhound/black lab cross who was only five years old. He was with me 24 hours a day for all those years, as I am a trucker and he went to work with me too. I've never been one to have many friends, and as I get older I have lost the ones I did have. Elroy was really my best and only friend.

My boyfriend has a pit bull that is 2 years old. I would like to get a puppy that will stay pretty small as an adult, and am wondering what breeds if any go well with a pit bull? I need something that will have the spunk and energy to play with our dog, but I do not want anything that big. I was thinking a pug or bulldog.

I have a 2 year old Maltese and i love him to death, but i am concerned because he does go outside unless i go with him and if i go back inside he runs inside with me. I have even tried leaving the door to the backyard open. He just sits or sleeps all day except when we go for a walk which he loves. Please give me some advice.

Thank You.

I have a Yorkie who gets fleas (He's not infested, it's just annoying) and our cat doesn't. Tried everything from Frontline to every over-the-counter product. We don't have carpet so nothing to put there. We bath him regularly, but the fleas just love him. I read this (Diatomaceous Earth) is a good and safe product to put on the animal and it's bedding. Any thoughts on this ???

I know they are very different but I can see myself living with either breed (and several of them at that!). I do have large (and X-large) dog experience as well as small dog experience. The breeds are Shih Tzu and Dogue de Bordeaux. I have had experience with both breeds but I was just wondering what others think about the pros and cons to the breeds. Please don't suggest other breeds because these are the only two I have interest in. (These are the last of quite a few breeds.)

this is an embarrassing situation for me and my family.my wife and i have no children, well not yet,so my wife and i decided to add another member of the family to our household,so we went to the animal shelter to buy a dog.my wife immediatly fell in love with a pit bull beagle mix she saw at the animal shelter.the attendant told us before we bought the dog to keep the dog away from cats, the attendant did not explain why so we just kind of forgot about it.so my wife and i took the dog home and we fell in love with the dog,he is very playful and friendly and loyal.well, one week ago i saw my neighbors cat take a bathroom break in MY yard,i became very angry,i woke my dog up and i told my dog that there was a cat in our yard that is mocking us,i also told the dog that the neighbors cat wants to move here and take his place as the main pet of the household, the started growling i let the dog off his leash, the dog bolted out the front door and attacked my neighbors cat, within minutes the cat

I was bitten by a Labrador in the eye when I was four. I have scars on my belly from a Golden Retriever pup that was never properly handled. Just a few days ago, my own precious beagle mix bit me in the nose. BUT I have yet to meet the jaws of a Pit Bull.

How many of you have actually been bitten by the 'terrible' dogs?

My 3 month old puppy is soooo nasty, that i don't know what to do anymore. I've tried training and every thing. Right now, i'm trying to crate train him. I feed him three times a day, exercise him, let him run around and play, etc everything you need to do for a puppy. But every time i come to let him out to potty, he has already done it in his cage. I'm fed up with the pissy smell. I don't want to get rid of him. The vet says he's healthy and there's no bladder infection or anything. I take him out at least six times a day, and i clean his kennel with lysol, and fabuloso to keep the smell away to prevent him from wanting to go again in his cage. I don't know what else to do, he's getiing sores all over from the pee he sits in. I have to bathe him everyday. Please help, i love my cute little puppy, and don't want to get rid of him.

I let one of my dogs out in the backyard for a few hours every day. There are two huge signs, "DOG ON PROPERTY" and "DO NOT FEED THE DOG".

Despite the sign and the many conversations I have had with my neighbor about not feeding my dog, he will still throw food on my property for the dog and then provoke him. I have explained to him many times not to feed my dog, and especially not to feed my dog and then touch him because he is food aggressive with strangers.

The other day I saw him feeding my dog and then provoking him by shoving his head away from the food while he was still eating it.

If an accident happens, who is legally to blame?

I am considering a Belgian Malinois as a companion and watch dog. I do have a large fenced yard for excercise and occassionally have small grand children over fo visits. I've read all of the AKC literature on-line in regards to this breed, but would like to hear from someone for advice that has actually owned and trained one. Thanks in advance.

We got a yorkshire terrier about a year ago and now she has acquired major fleas! I mean to say, you can see them crawling around in her wispy belly hair! Well, we are kinda tight on money at the moment and these fleas have got to go. We really can't afford Frontline or K9 Advantix, so are there any safe home remedies? Also, she is not quite one year yet, and she still eats everything she can. I'm afraid that if we put flea medication on her, she may eat it and become sick. What should I do? Also, I have heard about Dawn dish liquid, is this safe? If there are no safe home remedies, what is the safest and cheapest madication out there to use? And to get rid of the fleas in our house and/or yard, what home thing could we use? What about lemon juice? I thank you so much in advance for your help with this serious flea problem!

After I tell the story, would you get help for this dog?

My brother found this dog last year. He was working in Detroit and this little puppy kept following him around. So he kept it. It is the cutest thing, he is older now. He is a pit bull, shepherd, malamute mix. He has absolutely no manners, he jumps on the couch, on the kitchen table, if they don't put him in the cage while their gone he destroys everything. And lately he's been biting strangers. We think its because hes scared and he can either run away or attack. And he attacks. But the weird thing is, I can stick my hand in his mouth, I can do anything to him and he won't attack me. And there are also 2 cats in the house. He plays with them, bites them (not hard), hes gentle with them. Is it just because he doesn't attack the people that know him? He's really bad at walking too, he pulls aggressively. Since I've known him all his life, he is the biggest baby ever, but to strangers, hes a savage!
