i would say ...let the dog sniff baby while you hold him, then put baby down in its crib and smooth and fuss the dog as if to tell him he is still loved and wanted, and make a good effort not to leave doggy out in you affections. hope this helps!

If the dog is well behaved, well trained, and well socialized, the dog will be no danger at all to a new member of the family. Never leave a dog and child unsupervised until the child is old enough to know how to properly treat a dog. With that being said, the best thing to do is just let the dog see and sniff the baby while someone is holding the child. The dog will start to see the new baby as a pack member and will likely protect that child with its life.
As long as the dog knows its place in the pack, all will be fine.

When I brought my 3rd baby home I had 2 dogs. All I did was let them outside and went with them, I said hello and made a big fuss over them (I'd only gone 24 hours!) While I did this my partner at the time brought our baby in - our other kids were at a friends house and hadnt even see their sister yet.
We left baby in car seat and put it on sofa. I came in with the dogs and sat next to our baby. Max (jack russell) had never seen a baby and I was very worried. Our other dog starr (german shephard) was a pup when I had my son so she knew it all really.
Max was great, he sat on my lap and looked in car seat and a sniff and well then he got off and had his dinner that my partner had just done them.
Alot of people worry about dogs and babies and I say, if you trust your dog then stop! What are you worried about.
I take it that the dog is your dog. If it is them just ask the parents to make a fuss of your dog while you fuss the baby. until the dog gets used to baby.
My partners mum had a dog and we just put the car seat on the floor and let her sniff baby. They get bored after a while and go back to what they were doing before you got there.
Just dont worry it the key, the dog will sense it.

Hold up the baby so the dog can see her. Let the dog sniff a little, as close as you feel comfortable with. The dog will get that it's a little person. The dog isn't going to have much interaction for a while. When the kid starts being on the floor, you'll have to teach the doggie to not roughhouse.

if your dog is friendly, hold baby and allow the dog to smell him and realise he's not a threat. when your dog is used to that, maybe allow baby to touch the dog gently and jsut introduce them slowly.
I'd also advise giving the dog a lot of attention as when we first had a baby in the house, our dogs grew jealous when we spent lots of time wioth the new baby instead, though we didn't mean to. They're fine now though and my 3 1/2 yr old sister climbs all over our dogs and they're fine with her.

Let the dog sniff something the baby has used...like a blanket that he's been wrapped in. It will get the dog used to his scent.

Take that advice. You will be suprised at how quickly your dog will accept your child into his pack as he thinks and he will become very protective of your child. Most dogs will even instintively know not to play roughly with children.

If the dog is that much loved it will be a danger to the babe. I wouldn't leave the babe alone with it.
