My boyfriend has a pit bull that is 2 years old. I would like to get a puppy that will stay pretty small as an adult, and am wondering what breeds if any go well with a pit bull? I need something that will have the spunk and energy to play with our dog, but I do not want anything that big. I was thinking a pug or bulldog.

No matter what you get you will have the same issues to work through.
Never ever, ever, leave a pitbull with another dog unsupervised.
They are wonderful dogs, but, they've been bred for a very long time to fight other dogs. I know plenty of people that keep multiple dogs including pitbulls together. That is perfectly fine so long as you never leave them alone together. What would be just a little spat between two dogs, is a death match with a pitbull. All it will take is one fight over a leftover piece of kibble on the floor and you won't have a little dog anymore. It's not that your pitbull means to do it, but, instinct is a hard thing to fight. I had a friend who's golden retriever got killed a few weeks ago by her pitbull. The two were raised together, but, she thought they would be fine left together unsupervised.
I probably wouldn't go with the bulldog, they tend to be a bit stubborn towards other dogs in the first place which would be quite the powder keg with another stubborn, tenacious dog breed already in the house. A pug could be fine, or any other mellower breed. I have a dachshund mix that's a sturdy little guy. Very playful, but not assertive at all..

Your Pit could be the problem. They are a dog aggressive breed. My Pit was brought in as a puppy with my older Chi/Terrier mix and Beagle so she grew up with them. This year when she was 4 years old my grandson got another Pit that a friend gave to him. When he got the new puppy close to Honey, the older Pit, she would growl and snap at the pup. My grandson happened to come onto a episode of "the Dog Whisper" where Cesar was teaching a dog to not want to kill a pet rabbit. My grandson did what was done and taught Honey to accept the puppy. It worked in one day. The Pits are the best of friends now.
For a small dog, 25 lbs, get a Beagle. They are very energetic and would do great with your Pit. Mine and the Pits run through the house chasing and biting at each other, all in fun. They play a bit rough but they don't hurt each other.

I would go with a bulldog or Staffordshire Terrier. Pugs are not that sturdy, and might get hurt playing with a Pit. The Pits I've seen at the dog park tend to play rough and knock other dogs down by accident, so you want something that is very sturdy.

I have two pit bulls and a cocker spaniel. Each dog has their own domance in different situations but they play nicely together. cockers needs alot of attention and regardless what type of dog you get, you need to make sure you don't leave them alone until they really get along. Pit bulls are very strong.
