I am so very, very sorry to hear about Elroy. I just lost my best buddy two weeks ago; though it is still hard to get through the day w/o crying, the healing has started a bit.
Maybe it's because I began to realized that I am so lucky to have had that time with him (any time at all was a gift). I truly believe that we will always be and have a part of each other. I feel him near me sometimes, and I even talk to him when I am looking up at the sky - it may sound strange, but I do, and it helps me.
May I suggest that if you do decide to add a new family member (best friend) to your life, that you do not get one who reminds you too much of Elroy. It puts a terrible strain on both of you. I made that mistake once... never again.
Bless you and again, and I am so sorry for your loss.

I'm so sorry for the loss of your friend. What a sad thing to have to deal with, especially losing him so young.
I have found what helps me when I have lost one is to save another. Find a dog that really needs you and give him the good life that you gave Elroy. A needy dog always has a way of healing wounds you thought were going to be there forever.

some people say get another dog right away- but I think you need time to grieve - it's like you lost a child.
Give it some time- after a while you might be ready to get another dog- but you'll still remember all the good and happy times with Elroy.

I am sorry to hear about Elroy. I had to put my dog down last October due to kidney failure. I still get teary eyed when I think about it. All I can say is that it does get better in time.
I still walk into my house and expect her to come running.
The Rainbow Bridge
Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Let Nature take its course & don't try to push it all aside; then go & find yourself another. I had 4; got down to 3; thought old bully Rufus would love it; but didn't. I rescued a little guy off the streets, who has seizures. To make a long story short, old Rufus liked to had loved the little Peanut to death for a whole week, before getting back to his old bossy self. I didn't think I'd ever find another one as sweet as the brother to ole Rufus, who is 15 now, but this little Peanut fits the bill, 100%. An even older couple lost their dog & didn't want to get another one, either, but they thought they'd just go by & look at what was available, and, now this lab-mix they named Mister, has stolened their hearts. You never forget any of them; but somewhere, there's a dog waiting on you, & you won't be sorry; not one little bit. They're wonderful.

hi,
sorry about your dog elroy, it sounds like a really great dog. well twisted stomach sounds really painfull, i think you should think of it like this, if elroy died from twisted stomache it must of hurt, him dying was the only way to put elroy out of his hurting if anything you should be happpy elroy passed. my dog died and i didn't shed a tear because it is probably happier up in heaven. my dogs name was woody he was great but he kept pooping in our house so we had to put him to sleep, he was 14 he was looseing it, he was unstable. He couldn't walk well or wasn't responding to anyone. so we had to put him to sleep and make him happier,
hope u meet some friends and get over this whole incident

I'm sorry about your Elroy. I just lost my 7 yr old Yellow Lab last month. This site has been comforting. I put her picture, and wrote something about her. I can go visit her everyday.

I'm so sorry to hear about your loss, I have tears in my eyes as we speak.
I just went through a major surgery with my yellow lab. "Darlin"
she is on the mend as we speak but, I almost lost her.
I really think you need to find another dog. One that needs you too.
You sound like too nice of a guy to not have friends your way more caring than most men.
I feel as if your my friend.
:)

I'm very sorry to hear.
my dog died of twisted stomach too
it took some time to get over, I just had to keep myself occupied and talk to my friends and/or family about it whenever it bothered me
you can consider getting another dog, but it might be too soon
