and married, no kids yet, but my wife and I were thinking about getting a dog. I say that I am not allergic to dogs, but then again, I wasn't allergic to my dog that I had growing up. Would that correspond to all or most dogs too? I know I'm allergic to all cats, because I've never been around a cat that I haven't sneezed or gotten an allergic reaction to. Instead of going to the pound and getting a dog, etc, should I first go to an allergist to see if I'm allergic to dogs too?

Okay so my husband and I are going on a trip this weekend. we are leaving friday and coming back sunday night. The trip will be a 3 hour car ride.

We are taking our dog.

We adopted him from a kill shelter, so we figured boarding him would make him stress out. (even when he is held at the vet before checkups he freaks out).

Anyway, my question is, is there anything out of the ordinary that I need to bring or be prepared for .

besides the normal things.

also is there anything i can do to keep him calm during this time. This will be longest time he has been in a car, besides when we got him and he slept them (mainly because they gave him shots!!!)

thnks!

just wondering...are they looking for their own scents from prior excursions, other animal scents- looking to avoid or cover them, just hunting for a nice location???

Listen, my doberman is well cared for. he has been dworm, neut.,and had all of his shots. I love my dog! Giving him to someone else is not an option, ok. I just want advice on how to stop him. My parents are the only ones allow to walk him now, and he never breaks away and run into traffic with them, . I just want to know what I can do to be a better dog owner, I know medical care is no good if I don't find a way to keep him from getting hurt physically.GIVING HIM UP IS NOT AN OPTION! thanks

SInce I've moved into my new house I've had bugs that just don't die...fleas being one of them. My dog has had fleas since august I think and my dog and I are getting pretty pissed off. I've applied Frontline PLUS, treated my yard, cats, & inside of the house. They still wouldn't work. Besides the vet I made a trip to Petsmart and asked for a resolution for my flea problem, they gave me the list of supplies I needed, bought ALL of them, used them but still no success. What should I do?

I took my dog to the vet yesterday for his annual shots. He didn't warm up to the vet when she came into the room to examine him so she took him in the back where I couldn't see him. She told me she thought he might act better if he wasn't around his owner. She brought him back into the room after she had examined him and given him shots. I then took him home and he hasn't acted like his normal self. He's been hiding under the bed and yelps if you gently pet him. When he does come out from hiding his tail is between his legs. He looks so depressed and I'm very worried about him. I've never seen him like this after bringing him home from the vet. What do you think happened?

W hen i take him walking on the leash, he breaks away because of his strength. No fenced in yard, and he needs his exercise. I no longer allow him to run free, not even in the back yard, because he always runs to the front yard into traffic. Its so heartbreaking cause my mom won't allow us to play with him anywhere but on the porch(its screened in). I love throwing a stick and having him to chase it, He loves it too. We use to take him in when he ran into traffic, but now we cant take his leash off, thats no fun.I am open to all questions .We live on 21/2 acres, and he acts as if its not enough space. We can't afford a fence, but I don't want my dobe to get hurt. Help!

I see this comment frequently on here. Why do people think *every single breeder* that has a website is automatically not reputable?

I know of reputable breeders that have websites. Just because someone shows their pups online does not mean they are going to sell to anyone who throws money at them. Any reputable breeder selling a pup to someone will have a screening process and will have no problem saying "no" too someone if they don't feel comfortable with them. Also, there are things to check, such as what their pedigrees look like, if they have their animals certified (eyes, hips, patellas, etc., checked depending on your breed), what the parents look like, etc..

Granted, the vast majority of breeders who have websites out there, I wouldn't buy from; but I wouldn't buy from the 'vast majority' of breeders period.

(I could write a book about reputable breeders versus backyard breeders, but I'm out of room. Here's a website instead: http://www.wonderpuppy.net/breeding.htm ).

My in laws have 6 male weimaraner puppies that they need to sell (or find good homes for).they have advertised everywhere but in Alabama there is several other breeders and they live out in nowhere land so they have had no luck.My mother in law is now in the hospital and when she returns home will be unable to tend to these dogs and my father in law is also in poor health.Anyone have any ideas? The local shelter does euthanize so that is out of the question. And please no " they shouldn't breed dogs etc..." I agree but what done is done and these pups need a home.

My 14year old terrier lives under our bed, no longer barks, wanders aimlessly round the garden, cannot see very well and cannot get through the night.
However, he still loves to eat and enjoys being stroked.
We all love him to bits, but has the time come ?

How long does it take paw abscess to clear.Dog had antibiotics for a week, swelling down but still red?

Thank you for all the replies - I really couldnt pick a best answer as I was so grateful to you all.

To let you know what happened.

The vet gave her valium (she had got excited on her previous isit - but the nurse reckonend there had been worse !)

he lloked at her & was delighted that the infection seemed to be getting better,

My problem then intensified in that she either had a reaction or too much valiuma nd she collapsed about 3 hours after taking the tablet - she couldnt move at all... Her eyes were sleepy but she was breathing ok... Is at with her all night and to tell you truth I was worried...... this morning however she is almost back to herself.... I am still bathing the paw as it is still red but for now I am staying away from the vet :)

My 5 yrs old boxer dog is a defensive dog when it comes to cleaning her teeth. I've tried the best (and the easiest I've ever seen) dog toothbrush, still she is reluctant of letting me brush her teeth. The only thing she accepts is my finger, and am considering buying a finger-brush but its so difficult to find them in New Zealand.

Any suggestions?

PS Haven't introduced brushing to her until recently, I know it's a little too late but my dad won't let me buy anything for my little girl apart from food and worming tablets. The other supplies like grooming, flea products and toys, over the years I secretly bought stuffs for her, got pretty much everything now.

I just took my dog into the vet today and he was diagnosed as having Parvovirus. I know that it's a deadly disease for dogs who get no treatment. I just want to know if anybody has had a dog treated for the disease and what was the outcome?

My dog is a pitbull/akita mix she isnt big just skinny and medium height and my friends say she looks like a hyena cause of her brindle color and the way she drops her head sometimes when she walks. But when ever i tell them what she is people either back up or leave. sometimes i dont even tell them and they just avoid me and tell me to leash the dog. And to make things worse alot of the time when people try to pet it she snarls or barks at them although she has played with 3yr olds and is really calm. But people are usually scared before they find that out.

My dog started getting irritated on the top of his shoulder. Now he has lost a patch of hair about 5cm by 5cm, now it has gotten worse and has lost his hair all down that leg. it is not irritating him that much, he hardly scratches it but often i see him licking it. The area is not red and does not look to be infected. Does any1 out there know what to do with it? Any good recommended creams, tablets?
