Base on appearance alone (at a quick glance) both Miniature Pinscher and Toy Manchester Terrier look almost identical. Ironically their history origin, personalities, and temperament are quite a world apart.
Manchester Terrier was originally called Black and Tan. It was then renamed in honor of a single breeder who lived in the township of Manchester, England. This breed is very quick and agile, a trait that made it good in the rat pit. It is said that Manchester Terrier can killed 100 rats in just 6 minutes and 13 seconds! The Toy Manchester Terrier was developed as a direct descendant of the larger Manchester Terrier by breeders who wanted a smaller variety of this breed. Both the toy and standard were considered of two breeds until 1959. Beside their sizes, the Toy Manchester Terriers are not allowed to have their ears chopped unlike its larger counterpart.
The Miniature Pinscher originated in Germany where its history goes back over many hundreds of years. It was originally a barnyard ratter. It is often called the Reh Pinscher in Germany because its appearance is similar to a native species of miniature deer. They are called the Miniature Pinscher in the U.S.A. because their appearance is very similar to a “miniaturized Doberman Pinscher.” However, there is no genetic relationship between these two breeds. Miniature Pincher is a big dog in a small package. With its prancing gait and show-off tendencies, this dog is a natural in the show ring. Min Pin are not lapdogs despite its size or breed, they can’t stay still–a nonstop motion machine!

The difference is more than described here. The MT head shape is wedged with no pronounced cheek. Though the color is also black and tan it has natural ears and tail where traditionally the Miniature Pinscher ears were cropped and tail docked to avoid injury caused by rats. German farmers found that by cutting off the loose portion of the ear left little for the rat to bite on. Additionally the Miniature Pinscher in Germany though originally referred to as the "Reh" pinscher as it resembled a small red forest deer is actually called the Zwergpinscher (dwarf pinscher). It it not named the Miniature Pinscher in the United States because it resembled the Doberman. It was given this name as the english translation of dwarf pinscher. Originally when introduced it was simply called "Pinscher". The AKC noted for purposes of conformation that "it must appear as a Doberman Pinscher in miniature" but in fact is over 200 years older the Dobermann's Pinscher. They are not related at all and in fact the true German version of the Miniature Pinscher does not resemble the Doberman at all. They are not hyper but extremely energetic as with the Manchester Terrier. Both were bred for the same function, to ferret out rats and vermin on farms. While the MT has a more slender appearance, the Miniature Pinscher is more chested with more muscular appearance and more square. Many bred in the US though resemble MT's due to failing to meet the Zwergpinscher traits.
The Miniature Pinscher is the one that comes in the most colors, the MT is primarily always Black and Tan or Rust. The MP can be found in Black & Tan or Rust, Chocolate, Red, Clear Red, Stag Red, Blue and Isabella Fawn. They are in no way related as the MT is a miniaturized version of the actual MT where the Miniature Pinscher was bred in the 1600's by crossing a smooth coated Dachshund and an Italian Greyhound. It has no history with any other breed. Both breeds require special ownership and can be difficult dogs especially for first time owners. These are primarily sight dogs and if something catches their eye they can bolt off instantly. They love to hunt and chase so special care in providing well fenced yard for exercise is a requirement. Walking on a leash is not sufficient for these breeds. to see more on comparison you can go to

They are two entirely different breeds. If you want to more about the ancestry of either breed I recommend that you pick up a copy of the AKC's: The Complete Dog Book.
You can find out about all the AKC registered breeds. It is very informative and you may enjoy it.

You are right, they are very confusing. The Min Pin is stockier and blockier built than the Manchester. Manchester is 'tucked' like a whippet, and the Min Pin is more square.
Here are many pics of both, so you can see some differences: Manchester: http://images.google.com/images?hl=en&rls=GGGL,GGGL:2006-18,GGGL:en&q=manchester+terrier&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&tab=wi

They are two entirely different breeds of dog. They have some similarities; they are small, short-haired with pointed ears and sharp muzzle. Manchesters tend to be white with brown or blue spotted markings; while Min-Pins tend to be more solid in color..Red, Fawn, or black with brown. Manchesters are not as hyper as Min-Pins
