Don't waste your money on flea collars...
As to Frontline- I find it to be very effective for flea control. If you're in a tick area, it, or something like Advantix should give good control.
However, it's probably more cost effective for you to use a combined product that manages heartworm and intestinal worms as well as fleas. There are a few products for this: Sentinel (a tablet), and others such as Revolution and Advocate (spot on treatments) which do the same thing and are easier to use if your dog is difficult to give tablets to.
Sentinel often comes bundled with another product called Capstar, which gives a quick kill of adult fleas and together I think they are just as effective as Frontline. Revolution is also very good- I tend to advise use of either Revolution or Sentinel.

Frontline is an excellent product, and probably the safest one available because it stays on the skin. That's why they can justify the higher price - yup, it's worth it.
Flea collar don't work, they're useless outdated bits of rubbish. I mean, the fleas actually have to walk on the collar to die.
Hills Science Diet is my fave brand. Yeah, people say bad things about it - mostly people who assume the inclusion of cereals in a diet is a bad thing. Or people who just have a bug up their butts.
Most important thing is, NEVER use a flea product from a store.

EDIT: No, Frontline does not cause organ damage because it does not get near the organs. The lipid layer of the skin acts as a barrier to prevent it entering the body. Don't therefore confuse it with store-bought products, which certainly CAN be toxic! "Your vet was just saying that to make money" - oh that's bloody charming that is. Try to help, and that's what you get.

Frontline is a great product and it comes in 3 to 6 month pacs.
You didn't mention how old your pup is? Products like this is usually made for puppies 8 weeks and older.
Flea collars are cheaper but alot less effective. Also I would look for the Frontline Plus. Good Luck...

Frontline's great - I use it on my Newf/Lab mix. My new home had fleas and within about two days of putting the Frontline on my dog and cats the scratching stopped. I also combed them through and only found a few dead fleas. I also like Frontline because they have doses for bigger sized dogs. Instead of buying it from your vet buy it online at http://www.800petmeds.com MUCH cheaper and they ship for free!
Flea collars are absolutely useless and contain harsh pesticides that can actually harm your pup - please avoid at all costs!!!!

frontline, advantage, and revolution are your best defense against fleas. Dont bother with the cheap hartz products, "top spot", zodiac, or any other product you can find at the grocery store. They may seem cheap, but in the long run, you pay more, because you end up buying more products like shampoos, powders, flea bombs, etc to try to keep the fleas at bay.

Flea collars only affect the fleas on the dogs head and cause allergic skin reactions.
I recommend using Advantix on your dog and Nutro Naturals for the food.
My vet is astounded at the great condition of our dog's coat and health and I credit it to those products....and a lot of love.

Ignore your vet. She suggested all the things that make HER more money.
It's recently come to light that Frontline and similar products cause severe organ damage, cancer, and death in dogs. It is safer and cheaper to keep your pet indoors, or in a clean yard, and to keep your pet clean. Cleanliness keeps most fleas away. There are also natural remedies to prevent fleas, like feeding garlic & brewer's yeast tablets (available at any petstore), using tea tree oil shampoos and sprays, or rubbing citronella, lavendar, eucalyptus, or citrus oils on the dog's collar and leash every couple weeks. You can also mix these oils or lemon juice with water and spray the dog down if you need to go outside for a long time in a possible flea-zone. Plus, we're getting into winter here (not sure where you are) but fleas die off in the winter anyway. So I wouldn't waste the money if I were you.
As for the food, I hope you chose something better. :-)

Flea collars are no good, they only affect the surrounding area. Frontline, Advantix, Revolution are all good. Get the one thats right for the area that you live in. Living in PA I use the Advantix. Never use the ones that you can buy in grocery stores, they cost more in the long run.
As for food I feed my dog the Nutro Natural. His coat is much better looking, his gas isnt as bad and hes not pooping as much.

Flea collars are awful, they stink and cause bald patches on your cats neck. Frontline may seem pricey, but it's an excellent way to protect your dog, and by far the most effective.

I have always used frontline plus and had great results with it. It is worth the price. The stuff you get from the stores such as Hartz and flea collars are garbage.
