They're looking for the scent of other dogs so they can cover the other dogs scent and mark the territory as theirs.

I think they are looking to cover up the dog sent that is on whatever it is they are peeing on! But, at the same time, my dog likes to go #2 in the same spots. he remembers where they are and will go there for about a month, then will switch it up. But now that he is a year and a half, I have also noticed that he ROTATES his positions! He is a silly one. I think they also like familiarity. I can't really say for sure, since I am not a dog :-) But it is funny!

yo lo is spot on there sniffing for other dogs in their territory they will then do there business over another dogs dodo marking the area with there scent and covering over the other dogs , hes saying" this is my manor"

It's ancient instincts. Males mark out a certain territory, letting females know they're available, and letting other males know they should keep out or fight. Females advertise their readiness to mate in the same way. When no one is in heat, or everybody is neutered, they can just tell by the smell who's been by lately. "Hey, Sparky was here last night!"
