Call your local shelters to inquire & don't forget local breed-specific rescues.

I wouldnt get two puppies at one time. About guarding...my Lab guards the house just fine, then my friend had a German Shepherd(she lived down the street from me) and someone broke into her house when they were gone. Now my new neighbor has a Bernese, they got some wine stolen the people crawled through the dog door. And I know who did it they are afraid of my Lab. You never know what dog is going to be protective and what dog isnt...and to be 100% reliable they have to be professionaly trained.

If you happen to live in the midwest area of the country, they give these away here. They are vastly overpopulated, and are commonly killed in shelters. Here is a list of newspapers by state. Look in the classifieds in your state or your area. Please don't buy one for an outrageous price. You can get them for free if you look long enough in rural area. I know a man who is giving away a litter of lab-goldens right now.
