I took my dog to the vet yesterday for his annual shots. He didn't warm up to the vet when she came into the room to examine him so she took him in the back where I couldn't see him. She told me she thought he might act better if he wasn't around his owner. She brought him back into the room after she had examined him and given him shots. I then took him home and he hasn't acted like his normal self. He's been hiding under the bed and yelps if you gently pet him. When he does come out from hiding his tail is between his legs. He looks so depressed and I'm very worried about him. I've never seen him like this after bringing him home from the vet. What do you think happened?

Sorry. It was a traumatic experience, and he doesn't want anyone to hurt him. he's probably sore.

I would find a new vet. My dog was a pain in the *$$ at the vet and she never removed him from the room. Just keep gently reassuring him. Try only petting him gently on top of his head. Try doing something that would normally get him excited like getting his leash out to tak ehim for a walk, or try to engage him in a game of fetch. Hopefully that will cheer him up out of this funk.

Its hard to say for sure. But it could have just been traumatic for him. I honestly dont think the vet would hurt him. They tend to love animals and that would be the last thing they would ever do. If your dog doesnt go out much it was probebly just surprising. I would give him a couple days. He should snap out of it.
Dont nurture this fearful behavior or he'll think this is how hes supposed to act. I know its hard, because the first thing humans want to do is comfort them when they are scared. But the fact is, is that they are not human, and we cant treat them like it. Just leave him be. He'll be fine.

the whole vet expeirience is quite daunting for the animal
the disinfectant smell and the vet is a complete stranger
to the animal the injections sting a bit you can almost build up a picture of what im trying to say
and the animal can sense you are nervous too
and on top of this the animal is then parted from you
and taken away and lost its sight of you
he/she will not forget it in a hurry and for a few days afterwards will naturally be nervous of everything
just leave him or her be,and keep a watchful eye over the animal,it will see things are ok and slowly get back to normal at its own pace

Maybe he's just sore from the shots?? Give him a day or two and if he doesn't start acting normal, call the vet and find out what she did. What shots she gave him and what the side effects are.

You betrayed his trust you took him to a place where he has been hurt and he will not treat you the same until the pain soreness of the shots has well and truly gone ~~
