And how long did your mom give you to either get potty trained, or be dumped?
Geeesh! and people expect puppies to be smarter than children!
Routine is the most important aspect of training. From the beginning, feed 3 times per day, at the same times, and put the bowl up in 5 minutes, or when finished.

A puppy will need to go just minutes after eating, so whisk him outside, and stay with him until he 'goes'..Give him lots of praise when he does his job, play a few minutes, and come back in..

If you can spread down a bag of sand, from a garden center, it will give him a good place to go, so you can kind of aim him there, and not just all over your yard..

He should only need to go poop after eating, and perhaps at bedtime..

However, he will need water down at all times, and need to pee frequently..so, outside every other hour for that..and keep a close eye on him..He will need to go during active play, and every time he wakes from a nap..If you watch him, you will see him acting restless, and sniffing the floor, etc when he needs to go..at first, peeing may be just a matter of pausing, and uh-oh, there it is..He won't even be aware...So its important to never scold him for peeing...this is what makes traumatized pups that refuse to pee outside, or try to hide it in the house..as they get scolded for it, and it becomes a traumatic event..
Keep the product, Nature's Miracle, on hand, for instant cleaning of pee spots...or ask your pet supply which enzyme cleaner they recommend..

Puppies physiology only allows them to hold pee for about 1 hour per month of age...so expecting any more is unrealistic..a good reason for a playpen or crate at night.. He may hold it through the night, but is likely to need to pee at least once during the night..You can remove the water a couple of hours before bedtime..

By following a routine, and being ever watchful for the first few days, you can have him petty well trained in just a couple of weeks..or less

I house-train all of my pups before they ever leave my home, and I do it an entire litter at a time..it normally takes about 4-5 days, with very few accidents, before they are asking to be let out..
But, if you hang a little bell on the door, or a desk bell on the floor, and show him you are ringing the bell each time you take him out, he is likely to begin ringing the bell when he needs to go..Just be very vigilant, and yet stay relaxed..an accident doesn't mean failure..
Remember, it takes forever to potty train a human baby, and it is so nice that puppies can learn it so much faster, but they are still allowed to be babies, and don't deserve to be stressed about the training...
If you have important areas to keep clean, just keep him away from those areas until he is a bit older..

I recommend using a soft step-in type harness for the walking and leash training, as it is less frightening and stressful..eventually, as trust is developed, you can switch to a collar..but a soft harness takes the fear away from the beginning...Walking stimulates the bowels to move, more so than just putting the dog out..

Crate/kennel train the dog, it is the easiest way to potty train. A kennel acts like a "den". A dog will not do their business where they sleep....Also do not give the dog the run of the house yet, keep him/her isolated to one area, .........
Try this....

Let the dog sleep in the kennel at night.
in the morning, open the kennel and take the dog outside immediatly. The dog will use the bathroom first thing in the morning.

Feed the dog, about 15 mins after the dog is finished eating, take the dog outside again to use the bathroom. If the dog does his/her business, bring the dog inside and let her play. If the dog does not use the bathroom, bring the dog back inside, and put her in back in the kennel. (remember, a dog will not do its business where it sleeps, if you put the dog back in the kennel, it will hold it )

20 mins inside the kennel, let the dog outside again to see if it is ready to do its business.......if it does, praise her and let her play inside for awhile...if she does not use it, put her back in the kennel for awhile, and try again.......

Your dog is a puppy, it has its entire life to have freedom in the house, the kennel is not a punishment, it is a refuge for the dog, it will learn that the kennel is a place to lay and sleep. Just like a human baby, you would not let a baby crawl around the house if you cant keep an eye on them, you put them in the crib or playpen.......A puppys "crib" is the kennel. serves the same purpose. I know humans and puppys are completly different, but sometimes that analogy hits home with people. good luck..

1. let out first thing in the morning.
2. let out a little after finished eating.
3. let out in the afternoon/evening
4. always let out before bed.

I guess I have been lucky... house training my puppies has always been easy for me. They sell these pads at the pet stores... I forget what they are called - but if your puppy has a place he usually goes in the house clean it with a mixture of amonia and water. That will get rid of the scent. The pad however has a scent that they like, it draws them to it. Put the pad where he/she goes potty. Little by little, day by day or every few hours move the pad closer to the door. Once its been at the door a few days move it outside (if you have a sliding glass door it works GREAT.) If not once you see your puppy on the pad infront of the door take him outside and reapeatedly tell him to go potty.

Each time he/she goes potty on the pad let him/her know good boy/girl.

Take your puppy out about every 2 hours.... try to limit how much water you put in the bowel.... or at least keep track of it. If he/she has drank a lot you know that soon he/she will have to go.... pay extra attention and it should work!

Hope this helps, good luck!

Hi, I understand that you are looking for some advice or resources to help fully train your dog or fix behavior problems. If a professional dog trainer is not an option at this time, or if you want to trt training your dog on your own (a great way to bond), I'd suggest you https://bitly.im/aMUi1

A friend recommened it to me a few years ago, and I was amazed how quickly it worked, which is why I recommend it to others. The dog training academy also has as an excellent home training course.

This is very serious to me and close to my heart. If I only serve this one purpose in my life, then let it be this advice that I give you here and now. Tips on house training your puppy:
(1) Remember that they have to go potty more often when they are so young, it's only for awile that it may seem extra work but they need about 5 times per day until they get older.
(2) Feed small/medium meal twice a day and do not feed the pup until you know you will be able to take it out approximately 15 minutes after it eats. Then stay out until he goes poopoo potty.
(3) While they are young they will also need to go out more frequently for urination. Adult dogs need to go out 3 times per day in all, as they can hold it longer.
(4) Praise your puppy with a happy voice when he goes potty outside tell him he's a good dog for going peepee or poopoo outside. He will learn the word "outside" if everytime you start to take him outside you say "wanna go outside". Then when he potties outside you say "good boy/girl go potty outside" and put the emphasis on outside.
(5) If he has an accident inside, when you discover it make like a old time actress and gasp...that's all he needs to see, he knows what you're gasping at. Gasp and say ah ah no no then pause and say "puppy's name" wanna go outside" then take him out and when he potty's outside Praise him the way I told you.
(6) Remember to take him to the same spot outside because he will get the hang of it when he smells where he did it the last time.....or where some other dog did it.
(7) While he is still learning, use a newspaper on the floor if you're going to be away for too long. Remember to praise, never never spank.....he wants to please you if you will take the time to teach him. When you do use a newspaper it's a good trick to keep a little bit of the soiled paper and place it on the fresh paper so the pup will pick up the scent and go there.
(8) I have a rule of thumb to remember for when people are trying to train dogs....think of them as a retarded child you love that speaks a foreign language that you don't know. That is for you to keep in mind to use simple repetitive phrases.
Most of all remember that giving him this house training is one of the best gifts you can ever give him toward securing him a happy future. Too many dogs are thrown away because of something that is not their fault but the fault of the handler not knowing how to train the dog. You can do this!!!

hi there.

house breaking is such a pain the the butt somtimes...but i've found the easiest way to do it is to simply take him out after eating and drinking for about 10 mins or so, and if he has an accident while inside, then take him straight to the door and put him out for about the same time frame.

patience and persistance are a MUST with puppies and as soon as he figures out that he's supposed to go to the back door he'll take himself there to let you know he needs to go

good luck!!

At 4 months, its just now ready to start training. Be patient. Be consistent, timely and deliberate. Don't let the pup bluff you. Use plenty of "attaboys" when it does right.

Put him outside say every half hour for say 10 minutes each time and see if that works. Perhaps he may get the idea then.
