How long does it take paw abscess to clear.Dog had antibiotics for a week, swelling down but still red?

Thank you for all the replies - I really couldnt pick a best answer as I was so grateful to you all.

To let you know what happened.

The vet gave her valium (she had got excited on her previous isit - but the nurse reckonend there had been worse !)

he lloked at her & was delighted that the infection seemed to be getting better,

My problem then intensified in that she either had a reaction or too much valiuma nd she collapsed about 3 hours after taking the tablet - she couldnt move at all... Her eyes were sleepy but she was breathing ok... Is at with her all night and to tell you truth I was worried...... this morning however she is almost back to herself.... I am still bathing the paw as it is still red but for now I am staying away from the vet :)

Wow - You need to find a new vet!

Keep an eye on it and if the redness or swelling persists, take the dog to ANOTHER vet for treatment!

How about asking the vet who's examined the dog this question. There is no set period for abscesses to heal up - it depends on the severity, location, drugs/procedures used, health of the dog, individual circumstances. Your vet can tell you.

Valium is a muscle relaxant, so collapse is not really a surprising response to it. Did you call the/a vet when you were worried? If you're not happy with the one who's treated your dog, find another and ask them how long it should take your dog's paw to heal.

Valium for a dog? Are you kidding? You can't give dogs human sedatives surely? What did they give her that for? With professional careful, skillful handling it would NOT of been necessary.

Maybe your dog had a bad reaction / allergy to the medication?

The paw should of cleared up with the anti-biotics.... Bathe in saline....
- Good luck.

It should have healed by the time the antibiotics had finished. If it hadn't then your dog needs more until it is completely gone.
Refuse to have Valium on future visits.I have never heard of a dog that has to take them just to visit a vet! Take lots of roast chicken instead & give her that to keep her mind on you.
