I have read that if you punish a puppy by, say by hitting it with a newspaper, that it will only ruin your relationship with the puppy, however, my parents think that if you lighty tap it with a newspaper on the end of the nose it will make it mind. I do not want my puppy to be afraid of us though. Any thoughts on this would be helpful! Thanks!

I really think it should. We constantly hear about "bad daogs" and "bad breeds" but any dog whether it's a Pit Bull or a Chihuahua has the potential to be nasty if not trained. Of course the damage a Pit can do is much worse than a Chi, but I firmly believe there are very few bad dogs. Those that are bad it's usually a medical or genetic condition often caused by bad breeding, but there are many bad owners who just can;t be bothered to train their pets.

Your thoughts please.

He was taken from my yard on MothersnDay and was found on July 20th, but now he has patches of baldness on his hind legs. When I got him back he was loaded with fleas and had a bad rash on his belly, I do believe, due to the fleas. I have gotten rid of the fleas and rash, but now am baffled on how to get rid or actually get his coat back. If you have a suggestion PLEASE let me know. He does not seem to be scratching like he was when he got back home. There is no redness or swelling at the bald spots and he does not seem to be in any discomfort i.e. pain, itching.

My dog is almost 4 years old. She was an outside dog for about a year when she was 2. So she has now been an inside dog for almost 2 years since then and now she thinks she is human! I am tired of all the dog hair and here lately like I mentioned in my earlier question, she has been refusing to potty out side and she is ruining my rugs! So Is it wrong to make her an outside dog now? I have also limted her to only dry food so could she also be mad because of her diet change?

About a month ago my 4 month old puppy had parvo. She had to stay at the vet for 5 days hooked up to an IV until she was better. Once I brought her back she seemed fine (was eating and drinking, not throwing up, ect). But ever since she came back she seems to always be tired and sleeping a lot. She still has her little spurts of energy (she's a mini pinscher so normally she has LOTS of energy), but it seems like now all she ever wants to do is sleep most of the time. I went for a post check up at the vet and told them that she is sleepy all the time but they said she is fine and not to worry about it as long as she is still eating and drinking normally which she is. So....I've heard somewhere that after puppies get parvo they never fully recover 100%. Is this true? Should I just get used to her being a lazy dog now?

I know that a female can be in heat for about 3weeks...unfortunately, I don't know what stage my dog is in because I just noticed her swelling a few days ago. But, I'm wondering if I missed her being swollen prior to that? Ugh, I'm scared...I wanted her to have this heat (her first, she's 9mos old) and then I plan on spaying her after this. I currently have a male dog that is her brother, and am hoping I'm not too late in catching her!

I haven't noticed ANY bleeding yet, but she cleans herself a LOT. She is massively swollen and my only consolation is I haven't noticed the male dogs pining over her yet...I hope I'm not too late.

Can anyone shed some light?

I just bought him today. He's a yorkshire terrier, 11 weeks old. I leave him in a cage in the living room at night (and all the lights are off) while my family and I go to our rooms to sleep and he barks and doesn't stop, unless we go to him. I heard from the lady who gave us our new dog that we shouldn't go to him when he's barking or else it will keep this habit, but it's really hard. Help!

My dog, Jack, is a 4 1/2 year old lab, boxer, shepard mix, but 80% lab. His nose is usually cold and wet and it's been warm and wet the last couple days. Does he have a cold or the feaver? He comes inside every once in a while and it's like 74 in here compared to 85 outside. He's a very active dog. I take him on at least one long walk per day. We take him on rides, on the boat with us, and he loves to go fishing.

I asked a question earlier about my dog that has heartworms (he already had them when I adopted him from the shelter) and he is an outside dog. I felt like I was put a trial for having an outside dog. Now, poor Hannah has an outside dog that whines when it rains and everyone is giving her the 3rd degree because her dog is outside.

I love my dogs dearly but they do spend time outside - they need to. They are all 4 large dogs (all of them over 50 pounds). The commnets I'm reading are that if you have a dog outside you should get rid of them??? I'm confused about this - in my town most dogs I see are outside. My co-workers are shocked that I have 3 dogs in the house.

I agree that in excessive heat, excessive cold, or bad weather a dog should be brought inside but I'm sorry if it's a nice day I'm sending the kids outside to play for awhile. Maybe I'm just reading these messages wrong - any opinions???

The Hualien Animal Protection
Association in Taiwan needs to raise funds in order
to secure the home for their stray dogs (please see
attached article for details). Could you let me know if
there is a way I can publish their articles in any US
website? Your help will be greatly appreciated

Article:
We are volunteers of the Hualien Animal Protection Association. In 1988, we started feeding stray dogs on the street. In 1995, we rented a piece of a land and then built a shelter to keep the dogs warm and safe. We named this place Hu Shen Yuan. We got a notice from the landlord saying that he wanted to sell the land. The deadline is the end of this year.
Now, we have to write this letter, to ask for your help. Please give them a place to survive. We are recruiting your heart. The animal’s life is to be respected, please esteem life and care for the stray dogs, let them have the right to survive. Thank you every much!

My family has dogs that we took in because their owners couldn't keep them anymore, but they didn't tell us if the dogs have licenses or not. So I was wondering how we can get them licenses and how much it will cost. I also want to know what shots they should get each year. and where to go to get them. Thank you.
