I just bought him today. He's a yorkshire terrier, 11 weeks old. I leave him in a cage in the living room at night (and all the lights are off) while my family and I go to our rooms to sleep and he barks and doesn't stop, unless we go to him. I heard from the lady who gave us our new dog that we shouldn't go to him when he's barking or else it will keep this habit, but it's really hard. Help!

A spray bottle of water kept in the fridge. It amy seem extreme but dogs are simple minded. They wil associate the barking with a cold spray in the face. This should happen during the day, and at night put the bottle in plain sight of his cage.

You have to be very patient! He is a baby, and it's his first day alone in a new home--he's scared to death! Put his crate next to your bed so you can be there for him. Give him lots of exercise before bedtime. The crying will usually go on for at least a few days, but it will stop. It's like having a new baby--you're going to lose sleep for awhile. That's part of having a new puppy. You can't punish him for being scared, so don't squirt him with water. Honestly, if you just wait, he'll get better.
