Short haired dogs moult a lot and longer hair may need trimming. For calmness and love I would go for a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel.
I love terriers but they are tenacious and HATE the postman. Terriers are fun but rarely calm.
Good luck with your search and hope your Grandad enjoys his new friend.

Go to a shelter or Rescue with your Grandfather and pick up an older dog.
An adult Golden Retriever is long haired, but the intelligence, calmness, and loving attachment are worth a few stray hairs. Also, Rescued Goldens are so grateful to their new adopted family. A good rescue organization - for any breed - will help match an existing dog to your Grandfather's desires and lifestyle.

If your grandfather would truly like a dog take him to your local shelter to pick a dog. He should be the one to choose it. Depending on his age maybe an older dog would be a better choice. It may well already be housebroken and not hyper like a puppy.
Never just go and get any animal as a gift. However much love and kindness it's given with it's the worst gift of all anyone can give unless the person chooses it themselves.

If your grandfather is sure about getting a dog, then i suggest you look around a rescue center. You might not find what your looking for on the first, second or even third visit but the right dog will come along eventually. You want to preferably look at dogs older then 6 years old as a puppy will be to boistrous for your grandfather. Good luck.

Does your grandpa Want a dog? If he does, maybe you can take him to the animal shelter with you and you can pick out a calm loving short haired dog who needs a good home. You can find lots of adult dogs in animal shelters, which would probably be easier for your grandpa than taking care of a puppy.

It's OK to suprise Grandfather with a tie or a watch - but NOT a pet - ever. No pet should be considered a surprise gift - like some unliving thing might be.
First, ask your grandfather if he WANTS a dog.
If he does, then take him to the local shelter to pick out a dog that HE wants.

We have always had Whippets and found them to be a gentle, patient, tolerant and affectionate dogs. Although they are competitive when racing, they are adaptable and quiet dogs and can be quite shy. They often bond to one person so are ideal for a person who lives alone. They will be happy to curl up on your lap all day!
They are generally inexpensive dogs to keep, feeding costs are low and professional grooming is not required as they have a very short and fine coat.
There are Whippet Rescue Centres around the country who will be able to provide you with more information and dogs which need homing. A good organisation is J R Whippet Rescue and their contact details are below:

Different sized dogs have different needs and abilities.
Bigs dogs can be trained to open doors, take out food, get toys or blankets, are extremely loyal, and can warm up your feet when they lay down on them :) Down side it that they normally have to be groomed regularly (unless its poodle mix) and they require more food and stuff which means more trips to petsmart!
A small dog can be a lapdog and although they can't help by opening doors because of their size they can be extremely affecctionate and can still be trained to do small tricks.
For your grandpa I would bring him to a shelter and let him chose which dog he would like. Get an older dog instead of a puppy because they are less hyper and are more loyal. Tell him the benefits of different dogs and find one that he can take care of and love. Good Luck!

Definitely what you have listed, but also an older dog. I would check at your local shelter.
I adopted an 11 year old Pomeranian and he was THE BEST! I don't think you'd want to go quite that old or hairy, though.
There are many reasons for dogs ending up in shelters and just because it's an older dog, doesn't mean there are problems. Just do your homework and Grandpa will have a GREAT companion!

I seen this about an hour ago - PLEASE check it out!
