I have a dog trimmer, when I shave him should I use one of the attachments?

It depends on how close you want to shave the dog. The razor alone will take it VERY close. If you don't want that, use one of the attachments.
Hopefully the hair is not thick or matted. If it is, the attachments may not go through it anyway, or may make it look choppy and awful.
If you are "doing it yourself" on a regular basis, get a better set of clippers that you can actually change the blade on, not just add attachments. I assume you have the Wahl or Oster dog grooming kit that people get at Wal-Mart and the like. These kits pretty much suck. You need a real Oster Clipper that you get from a dog supply catalog. You can change the actual blade to get a better and more uniform cut.

Ok so I'm a dog groomer and I can tell you that cutting your dog's hair will not help her to not pass out at the dog walk. Her hair is her protection from the suns rays beating down on her skin. Also dog's do not sweat through their skin, they pant. Make sure she has plenty of water DURING the event. And don't force her to walk too long of a distance. She is a very small dog. She has to take probably 10 steps to your 1. So a mile could seem like 100 to her. Especially at her age. But just to answer your question... From my experience with yorkie hair, the best you are going to get is just to comb her skirt (sides) down toward the ground and trim the length straight across-short. Be careful to pay attention to where your scissors are so that you don't cut into the fold of skin where her leg meets her body. Then comb the hair on her legs straight out to the sides and trim with your scissors pointed toward the ground. Round up her feet. Trim her chest the same way you did the skirt. And don't forget to trim her face and tail. Anything more than this and you stand the chance of making her look silly and people will comment on "What happened to her hair?" Good luck and please be careful! DON'T FORGET TO MAKE HER DRINK LOTS OF WATER AND DON'T MAKE HER GO TOO FAR! She'll probably let you know when is enough.

The question is impossible, given the information. You will need some sort of clipper blade with the clipper. I suggest a dog grooming shop.

why are you shaving your puppy? I am a dog groomer. The only reason the dog needs to be shave is that it has a skin problem or it live near water and is in it. Please talk to a dog groomer in your area before you try and shave your dog.

Best to let a groomer do it at least the first time. Ask them what would be best to use on your breed of dog.
