Sorry, long story, but important.

My ex-baby sitter has a dog that attacked me while he was loose on the street (over a week ago). He barely scraped my lip with his bite, but wouldn't back down...the neighbor had to help me fight him off. The other neighbor came out, asked her to do something about the dog that keeps getting out of the fence, she's been attacked twice...she's pregnant. I called the humane society, mainly beause she's trying to run a home day care and can't control her dog. They haven't stopped calling me since, they tell me "he's actually a good dog, the neighbor lied to you"...etc, etc. They won't stop calling. I received a call today, she said, "hope you're happy they killed my dog over that tiny scratch...hope you have a clean conscious". Anyway, I assume they do a temper test on dogs before they put them down or something...help...help

My In laws dog is 13. He's gotten very aggressive to the point where the ffamily has to be very careful when handling him. My MIL babysits 3 kids under 2, including my 19 month old, who he tried to attack, luckily she came out with a light scratch. He also attacked my 4 yr old niece, if it wasnt for her shoe she'd probably have 4 toes. Both of these attacks were unprovoked and vicious. He is tied up most of the time becauce it's gotten so bad. My MIL want to put him to sleep because of he's violent (heaven forbid something serious happens to her or one of the kids) and also because she doesnt want him to spend the rest of his days tied up on a 4 foot leash, his breed lives to be about 13-14, plus he preffers to be inside and cries when outside. But eveyone feels bad because they've had him since '95 and he is, to our knowledge, healthy. Do you think its right that they put him to sleep.

My dog has allergies and the skin around his eyes is tender and swollen. He keeps scratching and rubbing at his eyes and they are now raw. The vet recommended an e-collar, but I am hoping there is an alternative.

I need something that would cover his eyes so that he won't scratch, but will still allow him to eat and play-- he's only a year old. Any suggestions would be helpful.

I live in New England and in August it gets really yucky hot. I am bringing home my 10 week home puppy next week and its probably going to be in the 90's for the couple of weeks. I live in a 2nd floor apartment and while the air conditioners are on, it only cools off to around 70's. I am concerned that crate training him will be bad for his health. Are there any alternatives that might keep him cooler or any tricks to keep him comfortable in the crate?

She just went into heat yesterday.

I have never delt with a dog in heat that lives in the house. All my dogs have always been outdoor dogs. So I know I am going to go get her some of the diapers today on my lunch break.

A little more info for you. She is a 3 year old Miniature Dauchsand. So this isn't the first time she has been in heat, it just happens I just got her last week.

But I would like to have her spayed before she goes into heat the next time.

I'm 16 and get 60 bucks a month. I have 2 dogs. A black lab mix (50 lbs) and a husky/chow/pit mix (32 lbs). My question is. Should I feed them Solid Gold:Barking at the Moon, which is grain free, and one of the best? It has a 6 star rating:
http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com/dog_food_reviews/showproduct.php?product=892&cat=all

Or should I just feed them something I can afford better, like Chicken Soup, which has a 4 star rating?:
http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com/dog_food_reviews/showproduct.php?product=907&cat=all

I also feed them some raw chicken twice a week. (Sunday's and Wednesdays) I HATE the smell of the Solid Gold. It smells like horrible fish (fish bait) or something, and then my dog's breath /and/ turds smell like it. -_- My real question is: Will feeding my dog a food with a few grains in it really kill him sooner, or what? I mean, it couldn't be that bad, right? Is Solid Gold really that much better? What should I go with?

I haven't tried breaking this habit much yet, but it is fast becoming a problem.
Yes I will ask my obedience instructor, but I thought I would see what you know.

I had a 5 year old pit bull male that I just sold. He was a great dog, but we had to sell him. I decided to sell him for a couple reasons. One we have 3 other dogs (4 total)and it was becoming to much work. The other reason was because he was aggressive with my other dogs. If I would have kept him he would have spent every other day in a kennel, and I hate to kennel my dogs.
He went to great family, he will be there only dog, and have 5 acres to roam. But I feel bad. I miss my dog, but I know this is what was best for him.
Any one that has adopted an older dog, how long did it take them to bond with your family? Did they miss there previous owners?

We can not take my dog to the vet once a month.... there has to be a way to do it at home. A way that does not involve my finger. Will a warm bath do it?

My newset dog, which we adopted last Saturday, had been very sick and the vet actually kept her overnight. He put her on Bactril. I looked Bactril up online and it appears to be some veavy duty stuff. Does anyone have any experience with this drug? Are there any side effects? Basically the vet said that the dog was in the beginning stages of Pneumonia.

This really is not part of the question but more of just a statement. When I called the pound to let them know of the condition of the dog after just 24 hours (which I did really just to warn them for the other dogs there), they became very defensive and were like once you take the dog home its your responsibility. We have nothing to do with the illness. They were very rude. I was surprised by this, since they are in the "dog helping" business.

He just started with this about 3 months ago. At first we thought it would be like something where he would have few seizures a year but, he has about 3 every other week. It is really sad and depressing. Should I switch medicine or what?He has gone through 3 bottles of phenobarb so far. He takes 1 in the evening and 1 in the morning. PLEASE HELP!

Do you stick with one obedience goal at a time until he masters it or can you throw in two?

Like you teach him how to sit and he sat without struggle a few times so you throw in the come command with the sit.

Suggestions? Is limiting 10 treats per day too much? Suggestions?

One of my dogs is a German Shepherd/ Husky/ Golden Retriever/ Chow mix. She has the coloring and patterns of the Shepherd and Husky breeding, the personality of a Golden and unfortunatey the coat and stubborness of a Chow. It's summer and I know she's miserable in that coat but she won't let me trim her. She is good in the house but her coat now is so matted and dirty she stinks...BAD! Can't afford a vet and groomer at the time so just seeing if there is another way to help her and me out.

Yeah, it may sound like a stupid question, sorry. I don't usually use it, and it doesn't say on the can. Does it need to be kept in the fridge?

I see a lot of questions about "what's your favorite breed?" or "what dog is the cutest?", but rarely does anyone say WHY their breed is a good fit for them. (I also see frequently people recommending breeds like springer spaniels for apartments, and other breeds that would not be good fits for the askers' situations/needs.)

So I ask:

- Have the majority of people on here just picked out a dog because it was cute?

- Or did you research to find out what breed was the best fit for you based on size, temperament, grooming, exercise requirements, activity level, possible health issues, etc.?
