Sorry, long story, but important.
My ex-baby sitter has a dog that attacked me while he was loose on the street (over a week ago). He barely scraped my lip with his bite, but wouldn't back down...the neighbor had to help me fight him off. The other neighbor came out, asked her to do something about the dog that keeps getting out of the fence, she's been attacked twice...she's pregnant. I called the humane society, mainly beause she's trying to run a home day care and can't control her dog. They haven't stopped calling me since, they tell me "he's actually a good dog, the neighbor lied to you"...etc, etc. They won't stop calling. I received a call today, she said, "hope you're happy they killed my dog over that tiny scratch...hope you have a clean conscious". Anyway, I assume they do a temper test on dogs before they put them down or something...help...help

In this case, you did do the right thing to report a problem, ESPECIALLY since it attacked you, regardless if it was only a scratch, and she is trying to run a home day care?!! Give me a break. Call the police if they keep calling you, because that is harrassment. If they can't take care of there dog and control it, its there fault. Stand your ground and don't be scared.

All right. I believe that was the right thing to do. Listen, before going to pick up the dog for seeing its temper etc. they ask around to see if anybody else was attacked, but still try to keep it down.
Then, if the answer is positive and the dog HAS attacked other people they put it in a special room to see if the dog has a sickness or something that could be causing this. Also they let some of their staff inside and let other dogs walk around (with special protection gear) to see how he reacts.
If they see that there's nothing they can do to prevent this behaviour, they take the hardest decision to put it down.
Anyway, haven't you noticed how some people even though their dogs keep jumping over the fence, they won't do a thing to prevent it? Or how they don't at least try to keep their pets under control if they have attacked somebody?
Think of what would have happened if you hadn't called them, and if he had attacked a kid.
Besides, mostly dogs get 2 chances before being put down, unless they have killed someone . Ask around for history on that dog or on the internet for any attacks by that dog.
I'm sorry that they keep pestering you with that, but if they continue, report that to the police, because they could end up doing something really bad to you...
Good luck!

I live in arizona, when a dog bites someone here, the dog is taken into quarentine for 10-14 days. dueing that time a dog is observed by professionals who can judge the temperment of the dog. those found agressive can be returned to the owner IF the owner has a 6' or higher fence and puts up signs for viscious dog. Under no curcumstance would the dog go home if it is a child care center and some owners are required to carry insurance on the dog for bites and mauling. Some are found too aggressive and put to sleep.
the quarentine also allows time to see if dog shows signs of rabies
Don't let this woman get to you either way, you did the right thing, if it had been a child, he/she surely would have suffered serious injury

First of all, this isn't your fault. PERIOD
Depending on the laws, dogs are quarantined for up to 10 days -if it's an owned dog with shot records.
If it's a stray, they can't hold it that long because of rabies threat. It will be euthanized sooner and tested.
Some areas have laws about biting that 1 strike and you are out. Some it's more. It just depends.
Your neighbor is very very lucky you don't sue them. Scratch or no, a dog attack is one of the most frightening things for any home owner and for anyone who it's happened to. It's not your fault it happened.
I am a HUGE dog lover. I do rescue work. BUT I do not tolerate biters. Depending on the circumstances once could be an accident. #2 is not. This dog knocked you down and it took 2 people to stop something horrible from happening. That is not your fault.
Tell your neighbor you didn't want the dog euthanized ( I'm sure you didn't) but I'm sure you just wanted to be safe.
Also tell her if she would like to bury the hatchet and move on you will. It's a horrible situation. If she is nasty tell her she can talk to your lawyer. You don't have to sue but it will at least shut her up. She's lucky, you could own her darn house if you were vindictive.
You couldn't tell the authorities what to do about the dog. It was out of your hands.
Good luck to you. I think you are much more understanding than most people.

I'm sorry but don't you dare feel guilty over what happened, the person obviously didnt have control of her dog If she had she would not have to worry about her dog being taken away. You did the right thing, There would have been a time where the dog got out and killed a child. So feel happy that you probably saved someones life in the long run!

Seems to me the situation you described was a temper test! I think you did the right thing. You called authorities and allowed them to make the decision. Worst case scenario (and I think it is unlikely), your actions were a factor (just one factor) in the humane euthanasia of a dog that could have been rehabilitated if sent to a different home and provided intense training. Best case scenario, your actions were a factor in preventing additional and potentially disfiguring attacks. Either way, you didn't exaggerate the incident and you let the authorities take appropriate action. I sincerely hope you have a clean conscious.
Take care.

You Did Not Kill This Dog!!! Okay?? Don't feel guilty. I'll tell you who killed this dog, and that is his owner. If she truly cared about the well being of her dog she would have made sure it didn't get out of the fence for it's own saftey. If she really cared about him she would have listened to the reports that this dog is becomming aggressive, and she would have gotten behavioral help. It was only a scratch on Your lip, but if that was a young child that she had in her home it would have done much more damage, children are smaller, and can't control an aggressive dog coming at them. Please don't feel like you are responsible for an animals death. You should feel like you are responsible for keeping those children safe!! If you hadn't reported that owner something terrible could have happened to a child. Just ignore her calls, maybe even change your number. And Please don't feel guilty.

yes that can happen. if dogs are guard or attack dogs and if they ever bite someone, over the tiniest scratch, the the animal shelter comes to the dogs home. if the animal does not pass a series of test of "attitude" or behavior, the dog gets killed. i know its sad and I'm 100% against the death sentence, but maybe it was a scraped lip today, and a bleeding arm tomorrow...

sigh,
i know what yoo mean
last year my nieghbors hunting dog killed one of my puppys and they put him down....the nieghbors still hate us
but no they do not get tested
they (where i live)
will ask both the owner and the victim if they belive the dog should be put down
if both or the victim says yes they will put the dog down
but in that case of yours they didnt ask because the vets must have known the dog had a problem
what was mostlikely wrong with the dogs is:
1, it was a hunting dog with no disipline
2, it was a dog that is prone to impulsive actions toward others due to no disipline
3, it had a mental problem
(and on number 2, yes i was pulling toward pitbulls, rotts, bulldogs, ect BUT i dont belive in such a thi8ng as a bad BREED of dog i was only suggesting that some dogs are more likely to attack if not trained properly)
i hope this helped
and please so me a favor and dont feel bad about all this
i would bake the neughbors some cookies
(if you can make them taste good! XD)
belive me
so many hurt feelings can be eased with a simple present
good luck
♥

In most cases depending on the state you live in, when a complaint is filed on a dog bite, they automatically put the dog down. There is no "temper test" to speak of. In some states, the dog is kept for 10 days and then released back to the owner. It all depends on the state you live in.Some states recognize "a zero tolerance rule" while others are more forgiving. It also depends on the circumstances involving the "bite".
