Yes, they can. They aren't as notorious for escaping as hounds, but any dog will run away if it is given the chance with the motivation. Training is key here. Don't neglect it! A very small ("teacup") dog can get into smaller places, hurt or killed when it runs away more easily than a larger dog as it is more fragile.
No dog comes with a guarantee against running away.

All of you above bloggers that don't 'have confidence' there's a toy breed of Chihuahua deserve the "i'm too lazy to make the attempt to be certain the certainty" award. All of you! As an proprietor and lover, and having had a vet circulate over my little guy to be certain he's have been given a sparkling bill of well being even after 13 years, those are remarkable, dedicated, non-nippy canines that seldom bark. My guy is a huge mom hen, gets alongside with my chocolate lab fantastically, and has 2 enjoyed ones cats he cuddles with. what's incorrect with you people for being such followers? All because of the fact one person acts like one in all those no-all approximately this breed yet they no no longer something, so which you all bounce on that 'runt/pup mill/in-breeding' boat. Get outta right here! Do your homework and you will locate an extremely super community of toy Chihuahua vendors that love their canines, are healthy pets, and that they stay longer than maximum breeds regularly. "hundreds of greenbacks in vet expenses", somewhat, the place do you individuals arise with this crap?

First, let me say this again! THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A TEACUP, MINIATURE, TOY OR PURSE SIZE ANYTHING. It's all a marketing scam that some breeders use to sell these tiny dogs, to make a bigger profit for themselves. What they call a Teacup, Miniature, Toy, or Purse Size, is nothing more than the runt of a litter being bred with another runt, to produce smaller puppies. A Chihuahua is a Chihuahua, no matter what size it is. These tiny dogs have alot of medical problems. I have bred Chihuahua's for a long time, and I would personally, never breed any of my female runts. It's way too risky. As for the running away, all dogs can run away.

Good Job those of you that said "tea cups" do not exist!!!!! I get so tired of defending the point on my own ha ha ha.
I am a chihuahua owner of both a 2 lb and a 5 lb STANDARD chihuahua's.
Regardless... why wouldnt ANY animal run away if left unatteneded??? Forget running away, how about other animals harming yours, OR someone stealing it (apparanlty that actually happens)

Thats their nature to wonder around and thats why they run out. But if you train your dog (any breeds) and if you give your love and let her know that you are the one for her she will never run away or out. I have a pomapoo she is a bit different than your dog but she never go anywhere even when i leave the door wide open.
She stays by me all the time.
So what I'm saying is it is really upto you and your training her.
Good luck....

Oh yes!!
I had 4 chi's now I'm down to 3 due to the death of one... and fostered over 50 chi's ... Some of them really never want to leave your side and but I've had three that thats all they wanted to do was run off!
My Tazzy makes breaks for it constantly .. It's almost funny watching his fat old butt trying so hard to get away ... He makes it 60 feet before he gets tired and decides thats it I'm laying under the car in the shade!
The best idea to is to have them microchipped and a really good fenced in yard! Also obiedience training ...

No. Why? Because teacup breeds do NOT exist.
But yes your chi can run away. It is after all a dog, and any dog of any breed without training and supervision has the potential to wander off.

Teacup is an "unofficial" term... but it's commonly used.
Teacup means under 4 pounds and under 7 inches. They exist.
All the people who say they don't exist really need to get out more.

Any dog can run away. You just gotta keep an eye on them or tie them up when you put them outside, especially small dogs. Even if your yard is fenced in they are small so they can get out, just pay attention and you should be ok.

They sure will if you take them off lead and you haven't taught them to come when you call them.. Or if something catches their interest.. Just like any dog, they will run away if you aren't careful and you don't train.
