I had a 5 year old pit bull male that I just sold. He was a great dog, but we had to sell him. I decided to sell him for a couple reasons. One we have 3 other dogs (4 total)and it was becoming to much work. The other reason was because he was aggressive with my other dogs. If I would have kept him he would have spent every other day in a kennel, and I hate to kennel my dogs.
He went to great family, he will be there only dog, and have 5 acres to roam. But I feel bad. I miss my dog, but I know this is what was best for him.
Any one that has adopted an older dog, how long did it take them to bond with your family? Did they miss there previous owners?

Don't worry about him. He's now in a good home with a nice family, but i'm sure he misses you too.=]

Don't really know...but as long as the dog seemed fine with the other couple..you should be good--but I would think dogs do miss people....we have a 16 year old pit--and I took the 3 kids on vacation for a month-dog stayed home with dad--and dad said the dog seemed so depressed while we where gone..the youngest of the kids is 3---and that dog has bonded with the kid so much---so I know he missed the family..

Taking an adopted dog home, the dog was busy smelling and checking out the new surroundings.
When the dog didn`t go back to his old digs, he
started to wonder what is going on.
As long as I talked to him and fed him and went through some training on a schedule everyday he
seemed to adjust. It took probably a month for him
to be fully comfortable and realize this is his new
life. Sure he made mistakes, but he is a happy and well adjusted dog.

I adopted an 4-5 year old male dog several years ago. And he bonded with me within the first day or two. That's actually why I ended up going ahead and "adopting" him. He was a stray who just "took" to me.

I work with a humane society. Most dogs adjust to new families fairly quickly. They can be a bit confused at first, but soon learn to accept their new pack and find their role in it, especially if it is a better, less stressful situation than the last home. Since you worked to find a good home for him where he won't be constantly battling for dominance and will get all the human attention, he should do pretty well.

I don't blame you for feeling bad. Let this be a lesson to you. You should never take on more than you can handle well. That dog didn't ask to be a part of your family, and now that he has bonded to you, he has been shipped off. I couldn't do it...it would be like giving away one of my children. A dog should be your partner for life.
It's great that he's going to a good home where he has plenty of room to run. It will be a big adjustment for him (and you as well) but with time he will bond to his new family. Know that he will just need some time to adjust, but as long as the family you sold him to are patient and kind, he won't have any problems.

I adopted many older animals and it really depends on the animal. I will promise you though that if it is in a good home it will eventually adjust. If you want to make him a little happier send him his favorite toys and blankets. Also make sure the new owners know what his favorite toys and treats are.

I think you did the right thing. Dogs don't deserve to stay locked up in a kennel every day.

He will bond fairly quickly.
Dogs are pack animals, so his new family will be his pack.
He will remember you, but if he is treated well in his new home, he will be fine.
I hoped you checked out the peoples home to make sure he won't be fought, especially since he is dog aggressive.
