One of my dogs is a German Shepherd/ Husky/ Golden Retriever/ Chow mix. She has the coloring and patterns of the Shepherd and Husky breeding, the personality of a Golden and unfortunatey the coat and stubborness of a Chow. It's summer and I know she's miserable in that coat but she won't let me trim her. She is good in the house but her coat now is so matted and dirty she stinks...BAD! Can't afford a vet and groomer at the time so just seeing if there is another way to help her and me out.

I don't know if there are any over the counter sedatives, but you can ask your vet to prescribe some. My sister-in-law has a St. Bernard, and she asked her vet to give her some sedatives for basic grooming at home.

No. You can get the vet to give you Acepromazine tablets, but sometimes they don't quite do the trick either. There is nothing sold at the drug store that will work.
The next best bet is to have the grooming done at a PetSmart where there is a vet and a groomer right there.

I have 2 standard poodles that I groom myself. And let me tell you it's a job! I have found that if i give them a beef leg bone to chew on while I am grooming them then they are content to concentrate on the bone and not on what I am doing. It works great and I seldom have nicks or burn marks from them jerking. If you try this option you won't have to worry about any side effects of sedation drugs. Hope this helps.

Let her drink some beer.

And if you say your dog "won't let you trim her", to be honest you have no business owning a large dog if you aren't the master of the pack.

Try having someone give her treats (something that will kepp her attention, and can be given slowly since it will take time to trim her) while you trim her.
