ok to the first poster.. she said that she JUST got the dog last week! So its not her fault that the dog hasnt already been spayed!
The heat cycle will last about 3 weeks... give it about 3-4 weeks after that for swelling to reduce.
keep her away from the boys, and dont leave her out in your yard unattended.. males will jump and climb fences to get to an available lady!

Some vets will spay a dog during a heat cycle, but will charge more because of added risk. When your dog is in heat her uterus is had alot of extra blood flow to it to prepare for the possibility of being pregnant. Because of this the dog could bleed excessively during surgery.
Keep her inside, away from intact males. Do NOT leave her unattended outdoors even if you have fenced yard. Males will go to great lenths to get to a female in heat including jumping over or digging under a fence, some fences can even be bred through.
Her heat cycle will last 3-4 weeks. She may stop bleeding in 7-10 days but she will still be in heat.
She can be safely spayed anytime after the heat cycle.

eadmon, just because a dog went into heat, it does not automatically mean the dog will get pregnant, give dog owners just a little bit of credit.
I have had dogs for 32 years, only had one dog altered and never put a litter of puppies on the ground. It has nothing to do with luck, but rather being observant!
To the question asker, many vets will not spay a female dog in heat if they can help it. They bleed a lot more then they normally would obviously. You can generally wait about 6 weeks after her heat and then have her spayed.

Talk to your vet. They can spay while the dog is in heat but will cost more, each vet will have a preference to how much time should pass between the heat and the spaying.

Most dogs can be spayed as early as four months. Most vets recommend that they be spayed right after they go out of heat for the first time. Make her an appointment ASAP for this.

you'll have to wait for her heat to end, she's too swollen right now for the operation to be safe. Just try to keep her inside or at least in sight and well contained. And watch out for strays and intact males as they'll try every trick in the book to get at your dog. Call and make an appointment with your vet for a few weeks out so you can get her in soon after her heat is done.

The sooner the better, at our clinic we spay young animals, this helps decrease the many problems associates with non-spayed animals, example pyometra, which is pus developing in the uterine cavity, only seen in non-spayed animals, in both cats, and dogs. However this is usually not seen in animals younger than 6-8 years. Your animal could be spayed now, even in heat cycle. Contact your animal shelters, ours here in Tulsa perform these surgeries at a much discounted rate v/s having a Vet. clinic perform them.

Each vet has different preferences and comfort levels, many prefer to wait until she is well out of season and the risk of bleeding is minimized (my preference) others are quite comfortable spaying a dog at the height of her season.
Consult with your vet and decide what is best for your girl.
And be VERY careful for the next few weeks. Dogs can be very inventive and persistent when they want to breed.

My Vet likes to spay females inbetween their seasons. It gives time for all the hormones to settle. I would wait for three months after this season and then have her spayed.
As for putting diapers on a dog, it is something I do not agree with. It is natural for a female on heat to lick this area to keep herself clean and b y putting diapers on her you are preventing her from doing what comes naturally.
I confine my females when they are on heat to the kitchen area where there is a tiled floor which is easy to mop up the spots. Most females clean up after themselves anyway.
