Hi, My pup is 5 months old. Last month I used the last Advocate worm and flea treatment on him, the vet gave me 3 when he had his last injection. When do I need to treat him for worms and fleas again?

I believe Advocate is a monthly treatment.

Be aware that Advocate only treats one type of worm, so your pup isn't fully covered on this treatment.

Worming should be done every three months. Flea treatment depends on the product being used - Frontline only need to be used every 2 months for dogs.

Yes Flea, tick and worm medications are very toxic. They are linked to many bad side effects, seizures being one. Any medication that will last in your dog's system for a month from one dose shows it is a very potent substance. But having worms and fleas are also not good, especially when allergies are involved. Something to think about is you may not need to dose year round depending on where you live. Some areas even have a very low risk of heart worm that it isn't even worth it. Yes there are natural remedies you can try, although the medications do work the best. There are many natural/non toxic sprays you can try that will make your dog smell unappealing to fleas and ticks, so they never jump on in the first place. Diatomaceous earth can be used to clear up an infestation. You must use food grade and it can be used on your pet and bedding and furniture. Actually the best natural remedy is a really healthy diet. Parasites are drawn to weaker animals. Plus a healthy immune system can fight off internal parasites. I home make my dog's food following a very well balanced diet designed by a vet and nutritionist. I live in a year round flea and tick infested area, yet my dog has never had fleas. I do not use any medications, sprays or any kind of preventative. And I take my dog to the dog park very often as well as hiking and still no fleas. I really feel this is due to her high quality diet. I don't live in a high risk area for heart worm so I don't give her any medications for that. But I think I would if it were more of a risk.

I use the programme treatment ( uk ) and its normally a 6 week break with the flea treatment but the worm treatment shouldn't be used as often. I've had dogs all my life and worm them 3 / 4 times a year but when they're pups, as yours is, i worm them every month with half a tablet instead of the whole one, too much can harm them, until they are about 4 / 5 months then its one whole tab every 6 / 8 months. if my dogs have never had worms i lessen the treatment to about once a year just for protection rather than cure. Your vet should have been more specific about when to give the treatment as all of them are different.

My vet treats my puppy with Revolution at each visit for shots(monthly) and also a dosing of worm medicine I think is called Strongent. after that I will treat her like I do my adult Lab. They will be given heart worm and flea treatments monthly. We use Front line for fleas and ticks, Sentinel or Heart guard Plus for the remaining worms and Heart worm

Hope this helps

hi, good luck with your new pup. dogs need worming at least every three months with a good veterinary product, flea treatments depend on the individual product.. Most important to prevent the spread of worms is good hygiene , picking up your dog poo, and regular worming. hope you enjoy your new pup x

It is normally advisable to deworm your pet every 3mnths. Its also good to dip your dog at least once a month. I would suggest you wait till your pup is 6mnths old and you can give him a dip then. But you can powder him up with Tick and Flea powder regularly at least once a week. You could also get Frontline which is really excellent for ticks and fleas. Its a spray which you can use on pups from when they are two weeks old to the ripe old age of any dog. I use Frontline and it definately keeps those critors away.

You should also ensure that you bath your dog regularly to prevent him from smelling, you can bath him at least once a month depending on what type of dog you have. If its a small breed, you can bath him at least twice every month (if you have a yorkie, every weekend). For larger breeds, bath them twice a month also.

I hope I have been able to assist you, good luck.

ok after you take your puppy to the vet he is goingto perform and fecal test to check for worms before giving you the preventive. if the puppy has worms then he should give you a medicine for it and tell you the instructions. after that you take him back to the vet and get him on a heart worm preventive like heartguard or other and give the pill to him once a month on the same day for the rest of his life.

the best luck!!!!
