I'm not so sure about the "technical" differences in the breeds. My folks had a tri-colour Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and he was the most loving dog ever. From my understanding, he was too tall to be considered a good show dog. Please make sure to stay in contact with the vet regarding your dog's ears. Both breeds can get "ingrown" hair and problems with deafness. I wish I had researched more about their potential hearing problems because we didn't know what to do for our dog.

It's easy to get muddled between the 'King Charles Spaniel' (also known as the English Toy Spaniel) and the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel - there is a difference. The Cavalier bears a greater resemblance to the Cocker Spaniel, with a longer muzzle, whereas the King Charles Spaniel is more closely related to the pug, being smaller, with a compact muzzle and slightly bulging eyes.

I would just like to echo the other respones you have received--the Cavalier and the Cocker are as alike as a Springer Spaniel and a Clumber Spaniel. They both have the name "spaniel" at the end--but that's where the similarities end.
I'm prejudiced toward Cavaliers, so I won't go on and on about their wonderful temperament and personality--just know there is a marked difference between their breed and the Cocker.
Best wishes in your choice of a companion!

They are two different breeds and are quite different in appearance and temperament. Cavaliers are a very intelligent breed and in my experience easier to train and more laid-back than most cockers. They are very sweet and people oriented. They also bark far less than any cocker I've ever met.

They are two TOTALLY different breeds!!!! MAybe both spaniels, but two different breeds. Just like a Cocker and a Clumber are spaniels, but not the same. Go to akc.org and read the breed standards for both.

I would pick King Charles Spaniel because it is an older breed and less colorful.
