This is more of a rant than anything, sorry... but why do people call dogs "toys" or "teacups" (as in "i have a toy chihuahua")?? And i'm not talking about people who are referring to the group classification of the dog. It frustrates me because every responsible dog owner knows that there isn't even such a thing as a 'toy' type of any dog! Dogs such as poms and chihuahuas have a standard size, usually around 3-7 pounds (although some get overweight) any dog which falls below that is not a special 'toy' but usually a runt who is more fragile and requires special care and also tends to have higher vet bills as a result of their size! Does anybody else get frustrated with people who call their own dog a 'toy' or those people who are seeking out a 'toy' dog?? Argh!

p.s any reputable breeder will never use the terms 'toy' or 'teacup' in describing their pups or they are frauds & going against kennel club rules!

I have a crate I bought, I plan on crate training. I bought a kong toy to keep him entertained, as well as a big rope tug of war (huge).
Besides exercise which I know they need A LOT of, what other things are there that work really well to keep them from trouble? (I know they are like a 2 year old, cannot leave them unnattended for more than like 3 minutes.lol

I have a 16 month old female pekingese. She is perfect in just about every way except she has one major flaw. She eats her own stool. Since she was three months or possibly even earlier she has done this. There's no way she has any deficiencies of any kind. The vet even said it was a behavioral issue. Has anyone out there had this issue and was able to solve it. Please help me. I can't take it anymore. I put here in the classifieds to sell her but I love her so much I can't let her go. I am really asking for a realistic solution to this problem. Please help me!!!!!

We just recivied a new rat terrier puppy from my sister (who has severe allergies and can't keep him) He is still a puppy, but about as big as he's gonna be (about 5" long and 4" tall, tiny)

However, we already have two chihuahuas. The older one is pretty old and ignores the puppy. But the 3-year-old /hates/ the puppy. He is ready to pretty much bite his head off.

So, what should I do so all of the dogs can get used to each other? I mean, the older one is bored, younger one is fuorios, and the puppy is sad and lonely. The younger dog, Buddy, has never had another dog in the house before, unlike the older one, Paco (which is probably why he's dealing with it better)

HELP!?

A couple days ago I asked a question about my dog making in the house. He is housebroken and neutered. He did this as a pup and I CORRECTED the problem but now, years later, he started again. I needed some more suggestions and tips and I get the most NASTIEST answer ever.

"you're a poor animal owner and nasty as well

i love animals but i be damn if I'm going to let them destroy my home.........

if you can't house break the mutt.......find another home for it

simple when you think about it .... "

I agree with ALOT of things people say in the dog section. No petstores, BYB, adoption, no puppymills, stop BSL, healthy dog food and positive reinforcement training.

But I love it when people get bashed for asking questions like the one I had asked.
Is it really that necessary?

Alot of you guys are GREAT (goldengal, DP, BH .. and a few others I forgot your names) and are always nice -- but use your comments when needed.

I wish people would actually read the QUESTION

We recently adopted a four year old mixed breed dog from a rescue organization and he's overall very healthy. This is our first dog so we had a quick question regarding heartworm preventative medication.

- Apparently at the rescue he wasn't on anything so should we talk to our veterinarian and get him started on something or is heartworm preventative something that really isn't necessary?
- What questions should we ask our vet when we see him next?
- Also - what kinds of procedures are required before he starts the medicine?

Thank you so much for all your help!

My doggie's vet prescribed it for her allergys, I was discussing it at work and a women I work with insisted her dog died from the medication and my mother said one of her old dogs almost died after after recieving an injection of it. Mine was prescribed pills, and I haven't started her on it because she just had a steriod injection but now i'm scared. The vet insisted the only way it could have negative side effects is if it was taken for long periods time. So i'm just curious if anyone has had any experience with the medication. Thank you

Two or three days ago, he ate a whole pig's ear in one sitting. The next day, he pooped A LOT. It was solid but apparently, all greasy and shiny (sorry to get so graphic, but I'm trying to be specific).

He ate fine yesterday and pooped three times versus his normal two, yet seemed a bit off. Today when I came home from work, he was a bit slow, a little lethargic. He sat on my lap and had the slight shakes. And he hasn't touched his food. He drank ALOT of water and keeps licking his mouth constantly. And he just threw up quite a bit of yellow bile. He went to his bed to lay down and is being unsocial which isn't like him. About an hour later, he threw up again. It was a tiny bit, maybe the size of a silver dollar and and it was foamy white. He also pooped in the bathroom. A small amount, kind of dark chocolate color and a greasy non-solid but not completely runny. His nose is cold and wet and the boyfriend thinks it's just a stomach bug but I'm worried. Should I call the vet?

My puppy is 10 weeks now. He is getting his second round of shots the day before he turns 11 weeks on 6/22.

There is a BBQ I was going to take him to the day after. Would it be okay to put him down on the floor with a leash? will the vaccination be working already? or should I just carry him?

I have a Border Collie named Sadie. We have been playing fetch all morning and I have also been telling her commands all day. I'm getting really bored of fetch and commands and it is way too hot to be practicing agility ('cause we can only practice outside). I need something where I don't have to go outside and do it, and I can get some energy out of Sadie. What is something we can do in the house that is fun for the both of us? Thanks

My 3 mth old toy poodle is left home during the day while I work. I come home at lunch, but I leave her with wee pads in her play pen for when I'm not there. For the first couple of weeks she was great - using them properly and not shredding them, but in the last two weeks she has taken to shredding them every chance she gets. I have got a special holder that is supposed to stop shredding and it worked for all of 3 days. I have tried different brands and nothing is working. Have any of you dealt with this sort of situation? What did you do? I am scared that she is going to choke on a chunk of the pad or will get sick from eating pieces of it. Any suggestions you have will be welcome! Thanks :-)
