Yes, it can happen. It would have to be a very small chihuahua, but the large prey birds look at them as a meal. There have been stories in the news where chihuahuas were almost taken from people in places like Central park where the owner was actually walking the dog.

I know people that similar things have happened to.
One friend of a friend (a real person, not an urban legend) had her 10 pound dog snatched. The hawk dropped it for some reason (too heavy?), but the dog had severe cuts and scrapes from the talons.
A Chihuahua (they are all "toy") shouldn't be left outside without supervision anyway, so just take extra care to watch out for predator birds. : )

I'll tell an experience I saw with my own eyes. We have a lot of home less cats here and one day in the fall one came to get a drink off our pool cover. I was just watching the cat and then a hawk swooped down and just took it. I almost chocked on my drink. It was amazing and horrible at the same time. If you have hawks and really big owls in your area then I'd really watch your little dog.

Any hungry predator could snap up your small dog. Wildlife can't tell the difference between a large rat and a small dog; it's all "food" to them.
We're a rural area of Northern California, and we have hawks, owls, turkey vultures, coyotes, and foxes around all the time. (We are also visited by a black bear that likes the neighbor's garbage.)

no as there is no such thing as a toy chihuahua but yes they would take off witha small dog like a small size chihuahua.
I had a sister who had problems with adult cats and she actually saw a hawk with one and a owl with teh other.
Chihuahuas only come in two types and that is Long haired and short haired. There is no toy or teacups they are just on the small side of teh spectrum and are usually runts.
A chi can usually be from 2 pounds up although in a few occassions you can get one even smaller than 2 pounds.
Please check the standards.

Hawks would for sure. I have seen newspaper reports of this happening. I will never let my Chihuahua's out in my yard unless I am right there with them. My yard is small otherwise I may not even let them out there as there are lots of Hawks where I live.

I'm not sure about an owl, but I am positive a hawk would. I'd never leave it outside unattended & I'd also be very close by!!!!

Yes it could happen. I saw a hawk grab a squirrel and go flying off with it not too long ago. It was awful. Don't leave your furbaby unattended outside.

Yes, if they are around your area be very careful! The lighter in color the more it's like a spotlight, darker ones can blend in. Just watch your dog like yea, a hawk......

Yes it is possible. Keep your dog supervised at all times when outside.
I know someone who had a pomeranian carried away by a turkey buzzard.
You have to keep your eye out for your dog at all times even if there are larger dogs around.
